It was a happy thought of the Bridge Circle of the Southland Women’s Club to combine the business of the annual meeting on Monday evening with the pleasure of bridge. Prizes were won by Mrs Clark (highest score) and Miss Perrin (hidden number). At the annual meeting it was decided not to continue the Wednesday bridge afternoons. Eighteen members of the Invercargill Tramping Club left by bus yesterday morning on the eighty-mile rim to Blackmount, where they are camping over Easter at the foot of the Takitimos in a cottage lent to them by Mr and Mrs Rodger TurnbuiL The country round this district lends itself admirably to exploration—both ■ the Waiau and the Monowai rivers are close at hand, while not far away is beautiful bush country. To-day the party intends to climb the back of Brumel Peak (5559 feet) ; to-morrow Lake Monowai will probably be the destination. The return to town will be on Monday evening. The party consists of: Mr and Mrs W. Fisher, Misses N. McNatty, J. Hay, E. Turner, B and M. Kean, B. Lindsay and J. Fisher; Messrs V. Taylor, J. Hail, R. Connor, I. Mclllrick (Lora Gorge), E. A novel and very delightful afternoon was given by the president of the Southland Women’s Club on Wednesday. The guests were the grandmothers of the club, and a prize was given for the one having the greatest number of grandchildren. This was won by Mrs W. Martin, who has forty grandchildren, and no fewer than twenty great-grandchildren 1 The reception room was beautifully decorated with great bowls of pastel-tinted sweet peas. Kensington, at St. Clair, she will go on to Christchurch, where she will make her home for the next six months.

Miss Cherie Lindsay, whose wedding takes place at Bluff on Monday, has been entertained at numerous bride-elect parties during the past fortnight. Amongst her hostesses have been Mrs G. A. Waddell, Bann street at a handkerchief afternoon; Mrs N. Haszard, Spencer street, at a bathroom afternoon; Miss Chrissie Metzger, at a bridge afternoon; and Miss Lilian Applegarth at a kitchen evening. The Girls’ Guild of the Bluff Presbyterian Church also entertained her, and presented her with a crystal rose bowl. This evening Mps J. A. Hamilton, Foyle street, is her hostess.
