HIGH TIDES

NORTH TARANAKI COAST. LAUNCHES IN TROUBLE. (Per* United Press Association.) New Plymouth, March 23. Exceptionally high tides prevailed along the North Taranaki coast last night. At Waitara, a sailing launch was unable to return over the river bar and spent a rough night at sea, sailing to New Plymouth this morning. Another launch returning to Waitara this morning heeled over on the heavy sea and threw a fisherman, Fitzpatrick, overboard. The ballast righted the vessel and Fitzpatrick swam to a floating barrel and clung to it till rescued. A small launch in the New Plymouth harbour broke away from the mooring and drifted on to the rocks and was smashed. Some damage was done to the sewer outfall which is in course of construction. A quantity of timber and other material was .washed away. While attempting to rescue a piece of timber, a workman had an ankle bone broken.
