ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES

GROCER KILLED. (Per United Press Association.) Gisborne, March 18. Struck by a tradesman’s van which mounted the footpath, William Hazell, aged 64, a greengrocer, sustained head and back injuries which later proved fatal. The deceased was opening his premises for the day’s business when the van, driven by Jack Elliott, got out of control, apparently through a failure of the steering gear and the machine careered on to the footpath, snapping two verandah posts and carrying Hazell on the bonnet a distance of over half a chain, finally crushing him against a tree. The deceased leaves a wife, three adult daughters and one son.
