LADIES AT PLAY. MATCH FOR COOKE BANNER. OTAGO DEFEAT SOUTHLAND. In brilliant summer sunshine the Otago and Southland lady bowlers met on the Southland Club’s green yesterday in the annual match for the Cooke Banner. The visitors proved slightly stronger than the home tesn, retaining the trophy by 171 points to 149. The margin of 22 points was, however, almost entirely accounted for by one rink in which the Otago players triumphed by 31 points to 12. Actually out of the eight rinks played each side won four. Some remarkably fine bowling was seen during the afternoon, the skilful drawing frequently evoking applause from the many male spectators. At first the visitors found the green a little keener than they were accustomed to but they soon settled down to establish a lead whjch they held throughout, in spite of a good effort by the Southlanders to wipe off the deficit. The Cooke Banner has been won as follows: — 1927 Otago 1928 Southland 1929 Unfinished 1930 Otago 1931 Otago 1932 Otago Prior to the commencement of play his Worship the Mayor (Mr John Miller) extended a welcome to the visitors. He referred to the reputation the Otago ladies had already established in bowling circles and expressed (he hope that the match would be keenly fought and that the better team would win. On behalf of the Southland ladies, Mr D. H. Thomson welcomed the Otago players. He said that at present there was no Ladies’ Association in Southland as in Otago, but it was hoped that one would shortly be formed. In Dunedin there were, he understood, 499,. lady bowlers whereas in Southland there were only about 50. The Southlanders would have to make up in quality what they lacked in quantity. Mr A.
