“SOIL, SYKES AND SERVICE.”
To the Editor.
Sir, —In Wednesday’s Times a letter appeared over the name of Arthur E. Sykes purporting to be a defence of “those civil servants,” to which I intend to reply; but before I reply, I would like to ask your correspondent to crack this nut: “The purchasing public depends upon the primary producer for its purchasing power, without the primary producer there are no purchasing public.”
Sir, the above is quite an interesting subject for a cultured man to attack, and judging by the arrogant and sarcastic tone of Mr Sykes’s letter he should be quite able to tear my little monument to pieces. I can assure him that by the time that you will be thinking about applying the closure, he will have ample opportunity to show the people of Southland where the “grey” is, and where the “brawn.” He has issued a challenge. I accept. No quarter given, none asked. Nq top-hat stuff. The King’s English so that everybody can understand. We have a good chairman and a good audience, the gloves are off; ”go!”—I am, etc., SLIM JIM.
