A DIFFICULT POINT.
To the Editor,
Sir,—ln yours of this morning you report the Hon. Adam Hamilton (in answer to a question) as having said “The payments to the Unemployment Fund are chargeable against net profit only and consequently a loss on one branch of trading, as for instance, on a farm, could be offset against profits from other sources.” Now, sir, lam a small farmer. I went three times to the inquiry office in Invercargill and got different answers every time. The second time I was told just what the honourable gentleman has said. The third time I presented as correct a balance-sheet as any farmer can make which showed a lose, but I had a few pounds from other sources filled in on the other form, I was made to pay' on the latter, which was a smaller sum than my loss on my farm. I paid under protest. Would it not be possible to be supplied with reliable information and not be made pay what is not our due? —I am, etc., SMALL FARMER. [We will have inquiries made.—Ed. S.T.]
