TORTROSE NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) Stormy weather conditions culminating in a heavy fall of snow have been experienced in the district during the past week. Gold fossicking in and around the locality is at present claiming the attention of several of the residents of the district. A meeting of householders, with the object of forming a school committee, was held in the school on Monday evening, 13th inst., when the following committee was elected: Messrs T. Golden (chairman), A. McEwan (secretary), D. Anderson, W. Chisholm and J. Thomas.

There was the usual good attendance at the popular 'weekly euchre evening on Tuesday last. The winners were Miss M. White and Mr G. Shirley. A meeting of the local library committee was held in the social hall on Wednesday evening, Mr W. Whittingham presiding over the following: Messrs D. Anderson, H. Anderson, T. Golding, A. McEwan, D. Stirling and J. Sinclair (secretary). The following appointments were made and confirmed: Mr D. Stirling (treasurer), Messrs D. Stirling and W. Whittingham (trustees) and Mr A. McEwan (auditor). Consideration was given to a dispute which had arisen over the payment of certain books purchased for the library. After a full discussion upon the matter, it was decided to pass the amount £3 6/6 forwarded for payment. A general meeting of the Southern District Sub-Union was held in the social hall on Thursday evening, the president, Mr J T. Lewis being in the chair. The following were present: Messrs. D. Fraser, C. Car law, D. Stirling, A. McCallum, C. Casey and R. A. Cox (secretary) and the club delegates Messrs 11. Golden, W. Whittingham. V. Freeman, J. Shand, R. Walsh and W. T. Blair.

The Secretary of the Southland Rugby Union wrote accepting July 25 as the date of the representative match between the Southern Sub-Union and the Town Juniors to be played at Gorge Road.

It was resolved to send a letter of thanks to the Central Sub-Union and also to extend to them an invitation to play a return match with Southern at Fortrose on August 8.

A meeting of the Fortrose Football Club was held on Saturday evening, Mr W. Whittingham presiding. After routine business had been transacted, it was proposed and adopted that a smoke concert be held on August 1 and a dance on August 21. Owing to the water-logged conditions of the various grounds all football and hockey fixtures to have been played on Saturday last were postponed. *
