CANBERRA A FAILURE?

THE FEDERAL CAPITAL. MOTION IN PARLIAMENT. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Canberra, December 17. In the House of Representatives, Mr Crouch gave notice of his intention to move at the first suitable opportunity: “That it is the opinion of this House, Canberra has failed as the Federal capital on the grounds of expense, geographical position and general inconvenience, and that a referendum, with preferential voting, be taken of the electors of the Commonwealth to decide whether the capital should be at Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth or Sydney, and that the consequential constitutional amendments be submitted later to the people.” Mr Crouch’s motion was greeted with "Hear, hears” on both sides of the chamber.
