WYNDHAM ANGLERS

. ANNUAL MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Wyndham Angling Club was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Friday evening, Mr L. B. Borrow (president), presiding over a good attendance of members. The annual report and balance-sheet was submitted by the secretary and .was as'follows: “While we cannot congratulate ourselves on making very much headway during the past season, we will hope that members will rally round the club.and try to make the incoming one a record. - “A point which must be impressed on members, is that only by entering in the' competitions can we hope to. swell the weigh-in and the contribution of the fish to honorary members will encourage sup port. Taken ,on the whole the competitions were not supported as they should have been and the club badly needs new competitors. Young members are inclined to think that they have no chance against the older competitors, but we would point out that the handicaps are such that young members are given every chance, so we will hope to see more new competitors. “The financial side is also a.little more satisfactory than last year, when although we showed a credit balance of £lO 17/2; we had a liability of £ll 8/9.- This year our balance is only 18/8, but with outstanding subs, we really have assets to the value of £3 16/2, Liabilities nil. “The club team were unfortunate in losing the Shield Quadrangler Competition but as this is the first loss in four years their performance has been really meritor-. ious. The shield is now known as the Wyndham Shield, having been remodelled and engraved, and we feel that the clubs generosity in handing it back for further competition was very much appreciated by the other clubs. “Four competitions were held during the first season and although not as Well supported as we would have wished, the number of fish distributed to honorary members was greater than that of the previous season. The following are the results: First Competition: Any river, any legal bait—lst. E. Beange, 2nd A. R. Udy, four weighed-in, 47 fish. Second Competition: Half-day, Wyndham River, bare fly—lst E. Beange, 2nd J. Hayes, 3rd J. A. Munro. Seven weighed-in. 95 fish. Third Competition : Half-day. Mimihau River, bare fly. Ist J. A. Munro, 2nd J. Hayes. ■ Four weighed-in, 71 fish. Fourth Competition: Half-day Mataura River, bare fly. Ist J. A. Munro. Three weighed-in. 24 fish. Total fisß 237. J. A. Munro wins the Borrow Cup and holds for the ensuing 12 months for the aggregate in No. 2, 3 and 4 competitions. “The club is indebted to and wish to express their thanks to the donors of prizes, Messrs Tangnej', United Trading Company, J. McGlinchey and R. M. McKay and Co. In conclusion we would like to appeal to all anglers for their financial support as a lot more work remains to be done, in the way of cutting tracks on the Wyndham and Mimihau rivers.” The chairman said it was many years since the club had been formed by a few fishing enthusiasts, and during those years the club had had many ups and downs, and had been on occasions fortunate in being able to keep going. Referring to the season under review he said that it had not been a particularly good one, interest having lagged toward the end, but however the prospects for the coming year seems more bright. He trusted that all would band together, and give the club competitions every support that was possible. There was something in competing for- a trophy in competitions, and it made the fisherman take the sport more seriously, which naturally reflected more interest in the club. By the annual report and balance-sheet they would see that they had come through very creditably a difficult season. They had carried out river improvements during the year, which would not occur for some time. They had also expended money on

previous year’s liabilities, which had reduced the balance considerably. The outstanding subscriptions amounted to £2 17/6, which should not be, but apparently' ~ members had overlooked the matter, and the secretary (Mr R. Robertsop) was hopeful of collecting the whole of the amount. It would be the last occasion that he would be associated with the attendance as chairman, owing to his early departure from the district, and he trusted that the club would flourish in the future. The motion was seconded by Mr J. E. Mitchell and carried unanimously. Election of Office-Bearers. President, Mr J. E. Mitchell; vice-presi-dents, Messrs G. J. C. Smart and A. R. Udy; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. Robertson; committee, Messrs V. Barroclough, J. Young, J. Hayes, W. A. Leitch, G. A. Johnstone; auditor, Mr A. Wilson junr.; handicapper, Mr J. E. Mitchell. General. In accordance with his notice of motion, Mr V. Barroclough moved that the active subscription of the club be 5/-, honorary members 2/6, and that an entry fee of 1/be charged for all competitions. In speaking to the motion the mover said that it appeared that the subscription of 7/6 frightened a lot from joining the club, and that it would be a good idea to revert back to the old membership fee. It appeared that they were going down the hill and it was time that something was done to secure new members and stimulate interest in the club.

Mr G. J. C. Smart seconded the motion, which, was carried. Mr Smart introduced the matter of holding a junior competition, and after discussion he moved that it be a recommendation to the executive committee to hold a junior competition for boys and girls during the season. Mr Barroclough seconded the motion and offered a prize to the vahie of five shillings for such events, which was accepted with thanks. It was decided to hold the first competition on the third Wednesday in October, the conditions to be any bait, and any river. Mr Robertson reported that Mr M. Tangney had donated a medal for a competition during the incoming season, and the donation was gratefully accepted.
