WOMEN AGITATORS
VIGOROUS PICKETING ACTIVITIES
NUMEROUS ARRESTS MADE (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 9.20 p.m.) Delhi, September 18. Persistent and vigorous picketing by women Congress volunteers caused serious disturbances in Bombay yesterday. In repeated charges by the police to enable voters to reach the polling" booths, about 250 people were injured and over 380 women and 18 men arrested. • The situation eventually became so serious that one candidate withdrew, and the remaining three candidates were returned unopposed and polling was stopped; but further charges were necessary to disperse the crowd. Only 1400 voted out of 60,000. A young Bengali named Dinesh Chandra Majumdar was sentenced to transportation for life by a special tribunal out a charge of conspiracy to murder Sir Charles Tegart.
On August 25 two bombs were thrown at the car of Sir Charles Tegart, Police Commissioner, as he was driving in Dalhousie Square in the centre of the European business quarter of Calcutta. Sir Charles Tegart was unhurt, but the driver was wounded. A second assailant was killed apparently by the premature bursting of a bomb is his hand. Sir Charles Tegart leapt from the car and chased one assailant who was subsequently arrested. He was carrying two other bombs.
