STAFF DINNER

HERBERT HAYNES AND CO., LTD. On Wednesday evening, September 17, Herbert, Haynes and Co., Ltd. held their annual staff dinner in the Mary Elizabeth Tea Rooms. Mr Ibbotson, managing director, was in the clrair, Mr Rout, the local director, ; also being present. The tables were set out in the form of a large letter H giving the room a very novel appearance.

On behalf of the directors the chairman extended a hearty welcome to those present.

In proposing the toast of “The Firm,” Mr Cutt said he felt honoured to have the pleasure of once again proposing that toast. For nearly 70 years the firm’s name had been known throughout the Dominion. The firm was second to none in its honest and straight business dealings. The confidence of the people of Southland had been won to such an extent that the firm still stood as one of the most reliable in New Zealand. Since the present directors took over the management it was evident that they were trying to make things as encouraging and bright as possible for everyone. A good many of the present staff had been with the firm for a number of years and he was sure that all were proud at having served another year with the firm. He would ask the employees, especially the juniors, to be loyal to the firm and be courteous to customers at all times and so help to keep the firm’s name in the high position it occupied to-day in the drapery trade in New Zealand. On behalf of the employees he thanked the directors for providing the diryier and social evening which expressed their good feelings towards the staff and their appreciation of the staff’s efforts in trying to make the past year’s trading a success. Mr Ibbotson made a happy response to this toast. He said they were pleased with last year’s result and were going to pay bonuses again this year. Mr Rout also responded.

Mr Ibbotson stated that it had been the firm’s practice in the past to give several prizes for certain performances. This year it was giving one for the highest in sales, another for the lowest cost of sales to the firm and a third for the largest number of sales for the year. The prize winners were: Miss McDermid, Miss Witting and Miss Eames.

After the dinner the company adjourned to the lounge for a most enjoyable musical evening, the following members taking part: Miss Pearce (songs), Miss Milburn and Mr

I Norris (violin duet), Mr P. Kelly (songs), Mr E. Kelly (cornet solo), Mr Inglis (recitation). Miss Haze and Mr Wood were the accompanists. A burlesque mannequin parade kept everyone in roars of laughter, the final item being a (“bridal” display.
