WESTERN DISTRICT DOUBLES’ COMPETITION. HONOURS WON BY NORTH END REPRESENTATIVES. (From Our Correspondent.) Bowlers had a field day at Riverton on Wednesday, when the Western District Doubles’ Competition, which had been previously postponed on account of unfavourable weather, was completed under ideal conditions, a light breeze from the eastward tempering the warm rays of the sun, and a delightful day resulted. The entries were large, most of the districts sending representatives, while the Invercargill clubs were also to the fore. Gore failed to put in an appearance, and the vacancies were filled by visitors and local players. The contest was witnessed by a large number of enthusiasts, and as the day progressed the number was considerably angumented by visitors from the Eastern District, that locality holding its annual school excursion the same day. Both greens were in excellent condition, while the fine display of blooms greatly enhanced the grounds, the whole presenting a very pleasing picture. Complimentary remarks were heard from visitors, one commenting on the fact that Riverton could support two clubs, while other centres, with large populations were experiencing difficulty in keeping the same number going. The management on the Aparima green was all that could be desired ;; the results were promptly posted, while the superintendent was always at his post, and ever ready to render any necessary information. On the south green, however, the official attempted a difficult task by taking part in the games and also endeavouring to conduct the arrangements, and after the second round he found it necessary to retire from play, the vacancy being willingly filled by a visiting bowler. At future gatherings it is to be hoped the executive will appoint an official whose sole duties will be attention to the scoring board, and who will be available throughout the contest to supply all necessary information asked for by bowlers and others interested in the game. At the close of the play it was found that Mills and Scandrett, and Pryde and Shaw were equal with four games each, and in the play off of seven heads, the first named defeated their opponents by the small margin of one. In the evening the final was played on the south green in the presence of a large number of interested spectators, between Aparima and North End. Hill and his partner commenced well, and at the 16th head was leading by eight, but the light began to wane. At the 19th head honours were even —19 all; Scandrett was two up at the 20th, and Hill evened matters at the 21st. head. This necessitated an extra head being played, and the services of an oil lamp had to be requisitioned owing to the failing light. Scandrett drew the shot, making him 22 to Hill’s 21. During the tournament refreshments were provided, Mesdames. Crawford and Hayles being in charge of Aparima green, while Riverton was run by a member of the club. Following are the results of the day’s play:— RIVERTON GREEN. First Round. Alex. Evans and S. Hall (Riverton) 12 v. Hall and King (filling a vacancy) 4. C. A. Caigon and W. S. Hunter (Aparima) 8, v.
