SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Acceptances and Trial Stakes entries for the first day of the Dunedin J.C. meeting close to-night. The N'.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Summer meeting takes place at Addington to-morrow afternoon. Nominations for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Summer meeting on February 22 are due this evening. During the current season the progeny of Southland stallion Songbird have won £2387 in stakes. Hurdler Red Fuchsia is evidently on the warpath again, as he is entered at ttanganui R.C’s. meeting.’ Wingatui mentor S. G. Ware has every chance of heading the winning trainers’ list for the current racing season. The Hobart Cup. £6OO and a £5O trophy (one mile and a halfl, will be run at Tasmania R.C. meeting on Wednesday next. The Australian autumn season opens at Caulfield on Saturday, Feb. 15, when the Oakleigh Plate (51f.) will be decided. Reported from Wanganui that. Ceremony has now recovered from his Sydney spring trip and will soon be racing again. Disliking the right-handed racing in Sydney, American jockey, R. Zucchini, is going to ride left-handed on Melbourne tracks. In the United States all galloping events are decided as in New Zealand and Victoria, as they are run the left-handed way. It. is anticipated that the Wanganui J.C. Autumn meeting, on the same day as the D.J.C. fixture, will be the most successful for some years. Following* on a six months’ spell the Wanganui gelding. Mask, by Limond —Cowl, has appeared on the tracks and is looking bright, and well. Owing to Mr C. O’Connor not being able to act at. Wanganui next week, Mr W. C. Price will be starter for the Autumn fixture. The sum of 2000 guineas was quoted as the price of the Napier youngster .Outward Bound (Cape Hom—Gold Bound)' and discarded by an Aussie. Riccarton mentor R. W. King has the hurdlers Aberfeldy and Gala Day in work at Riccarton and the latter is reported as very forward. Glare is reported to have done well since the Wellington R.C. meeting and will leave for the south to-day to fulfil his Dunedin Cup engagement. Mr A. Robertson, who took Strephon to England twelve months ago, has returned and places Fairway and Bosworth as the best horses in the Old Country. Oratrix will probably be tried out at the Woodville meeting on Feb. 19 and 20, and it will then be deckled as to whether an Easter trip to Sydney is desirable. Melbourne jockey W. Duncan, who had his neck dislocated some time ago, has returned home from hospital quarters, but will not be able to sit up for some time. The geldings, Mount Boa and El Boa, have been very successful this season in assisting their sire, Balboa, to improve his position on the winning sires’ list. At a recent sale in Sydney, Tea Miss, by Tea Tray—Miss Girons, owned by Mr O. Falkiner, was submitted at auction and changed hands at 350 guineas. The Australian-bred hurdler. Amorist, by Baverstock—Amicitia, has been taken up again at Riccarton by R. Longley to prepare for the winter jumping season. The Melbourne-owned three-year-old Carradale will not be on hand to oppose Phar Lap in the V.R.C. St. Leger, as he is to be treated to a lengthy holiday. The square-trotting mare Ukulele Lady, who is trained at Blenheim, has arrived at Addington to play her part in the Cashmere Handicap at the N.Z.M.T.C. meeting tomorrow. • The ex-New Zealand Cup winner The Banker, who cost Mr O. Falkiner 3000gns, was passed in at"auction recently at 90gns, and will now prepare for the hurdling game in Sydney. The N.S.W. breeder, Mr Percy Miller, of the Kia Ora Stud, is sending the record number of 100 yearlings up for disposal at the forthcoming sales in Sydney during the coming Easter season. The Auckland-owned two-year-old Hard Words has two half-sisters known to fame in the ]xmy world in Sydney, viz., Little Mart, by Martian, and Millimetre, by Solferino —Mazabuka. The well-known New Zealand-bred gelding Stormy, by Quin Abbey, who has been off the scene in Australia of late, p reported to be coming to hand again and is likely to be ready for racing this month. Christchurch Press reports that the Aus-tralian-bred pacing mare, Glideaway, who raced successfully from W. J. Tomkinson’s stable, is to be sent back to Victoria this month. She won the Dunedin and Otahuhu Cups. The Winton-bred square trotter Jock Bingen, who has been racing very consist ently of late in the north, will probably be a starter in the Spreydon Handicap at Addington to-morrow and may prove hard to head off. At the forthcoming Sydney yearling sales Windbag will be represented for the first time. The descendants of the Magpie— Charleville (N.Z.) horse will number sixteen, including ten colts and six fillies. It will be very interesting to see how the progeny of a colonial sire fare. Remindful, the pupil of local trainer G. Hope, who won the Trial Stakes at the Tapanui meeting on Wednesday, is by Balboa—Reminder, by Canrobert, and traces back in unbroken line to that great racehorse and good sire Advance. When Mr P. Miller’s yearlings come up for sale in Sydney at Easter it is safe to say that the representations of Magpie, 19 colts and five fillies, will find ready buyers, as also will ten fillies and nine colts by Lcgionaire, as the latters’ two-year-old have been racing well. It is understood that after his displays at the Tapanui meeting on Wednesday a very lengthy price wits offered for Nelson’s Victory, by Nelson Bingen from Misfortune (a proved producer), but there was nothing doing on the owner’s side. It is reported from the North Island that the four-year-old gelding Knightlike, by Paladin—Sweet Charity, is at present under offer for sale, and there is every every likelii hood of his changing hands. The son of the Otago sire is a smart galloper and likely to win good races. The veteran Wanganui district mentor, F. Tilley, has handed the Fordell training establishment over to L. G. Morris and is at preßent living in the river town preparatory to leaving for England this month. Tilley trained at Fordell for thirty-five years and turf history testifies to his lengthy list of successes during that period. That good gelding Footfall, by Autumnus —Waratep, has made his reappearance on the Riccarton tracks with G. Murray Ayns-

leys’ team. He is to be hacked about for some time to come to season him for strenuous tasks ahead. In the meantime the sturdy galloper is reported to be looking well after his holiday.

Riccarton trainer T. H. Gillett will probably race. Count Cavour, The Viscount, Amor and Leader a Wingatui next week. It might be just as well to remember that Amor and Leader are in this string, as the former is a solid stayer and Leader is very brilliant over short courses.

Riccarton reports are to the effect that Mr G. D. Greenwood will 'be represented at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s fixture on Thursday and Saturday of next week by Praise, Pride and Greenaway. The firstnamed is a two-year-old whose well-grown appearance will interest those who have not already seen her.

Christchurch Star reports that Sir George Clifford will be represented at the Dunedin J.C. Autumn meeting by Disorder, Hurly Burly. Straightcourse, Waterline and Ball Dress. H. Cutts will escort the Chokebore Lodge team south by Sunday night s train. Waterline will interest southerners, as he raced well at Trentham recently.

Under the care of W. H. Playford, Wise Force and In Petto have made a journey of 10S6 miles from Brisbane to Melbourne in an effort to win the rich Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup double. Wise Force is the sprinter and In Petto the stayer. Wise Fqrce is a handsome three-year-old colt by High Force (Tracery— Vaucluse) from Wise Bird, a New Zealand mare bv Treadmill-Glenowlet, by Clanranald—Madowla, by Trenton—Azalea (imp.).

Riccarton trainer F. D. Jones (reports Christchurch Tinies) will leave on Sunday night for Wingatui, with Paquito, Marsham, Gay Crest, Dunravcn and Coroner. Ihe last-named pair arc in the Champagne Stakps, and, as they race in different interests, it is probable that both of them will be started in the classic event.

That a veteran of the turf known from Perth to the Bluff as a classic event performer not. partial to racing over a mile and a half, and at his age, too, in the shape of The Hawk, should score in the Taranaki Cup yesterday, will create interest throughout Australia and New Zealand. Foaled away back in 1918, The Hawk is now rising twelve years of age, and his endurance is something to wonder at, as he has been through many severe preparations and has raced from New Zealand to Sydney and Melbourne and home again to Hawkes Bay many times. He will always rank as one of the stoutest of his mighty sire’s descendants and form an example of the lasting quality of the best Maoriland thoroughbred tribe. Bred by the late Mr J. F. Buchanan, of the Kinloch Stud, he was got by Martian from Sparrow Hawk, by Land League—Hungry Bird, by Missel Thrush —Hungry, by Kisber —Plevna, by Lord Clifden, and thus he comes of English parentage through sire and dam. He is trained by his owner, Mr J. M. Cameron, who in his early days was known as a successful jockey in Otago and Southland with Mr J. Loughlin.

When Aorangi won the Paddington Handicap last month (remarks Melbourne Sporting Globe), his big betting owner, Mr T. C. Trautwein recovered all he had lost as a result of the gelding's recent failures and a portion of the 6000 guineas paid by him for Chide in New Zealand recently. Aorangi disappointed at Moorefield a week ago, but on Saturday Mr Trautwein made no secret of his belief that the heavy going at Randwick would enable him to display something approaching his best form. The owner is credited with having averaged slightly less than 8 to 1. but at fiagfall the son of Newmarket (imp.) was firm at 6/1.

There is no doubt that H. Gray has lost none of his skill in the saddle. He showed this at Takapuna last week, says a northern writer. Lady Quex certainly gave him an armchair ride, but he was seen to decided advantage on Kawainga and Taneriri. The Takapuna course is a severe test of a rider, and those who laid the odds on Taneriri must have been grateful to Gray. With 9.3 the gelding could not go the pace set in the early part, gut his veteran rider was content to sit in behind until three furlongs from home, when he sent Taneriri through to obtain a winning position at the turn. It was a good example of the value of experience and judgment.

The Invercargill-owned and trained mare, Erin’s Fortune (says a Christchurch Times writer), was given plenty of work at the Forbury Park Club’s meeting last week. She started in the mile saddle event on the first day and won decisively, and later in the day she contested the King George Handicap, of two miles, in which she finished second to Liberal. On the second day she was third in the mile saddle event to Rita McKinney and ■Marinca, and after making a very bad beginning was fourth in the Royal Handicap. Erin's Fortune seemed to be none the worse for her racing, and in her last effort she showed a lot of speed once she settled down to her work.

The Coronation Cup is run over the Derby course at Epsom on June 5. Four entries were received from France, and the best of the English horses entered were: Athford, Fairway, Bosworth, King’s Oven, Haste Away, Baytown, Kopi, Le Phare, Soloptic, Artist’s Proof, Horus, Jugo, Piantago, Press Gang, Walter Gay. For the Ascot Gold Cup (21 miles), run at Ascot on June 19, 13 entries have been received from France. The best of the English horses nominated are: Cavendo, Athford, Fairway, Bosworth, King's Oven, Haste Away, Clear Cash, Baytown, Kopi, Le Voleur, Cacao,'Walter Gay, If all goes well with him, Strephon should be at his best for this race. Like Strephon, Ortello, the Italian crack, has been entered for both races. Strephon’s owner, Mr Sol Green, will leave Sydney on March 18 to see his horse perform at the above meetings.

According to the Auckland Star those in charge of proceedings at the Waipapakauri meeting last Saturday found themselves in something of a dilemma when the Highweight Handicap came to be run. Horses for this event were to ge ridden by hurdle or steeplechase jockeys, but it was found that there were only two such on the ground. This admitted of the engagement of flat-riders carrying a 71b penalty. The real difficulty arose when these lighter weights came to make up the welter poundage, for it was found that there was nothing like a sufficient supply of leads available, make-weight being required ranging from 211 b to 421 b. Then came a wild search for anything ponderable that would serve the purpose, and eventually horses ridden by the little men went out laden with all sorts of junk, ranging from plumber’s tools to potato bags. Eventually the race went to one of the properly qualified riders on Glena Bay. GALLOPS AT WINGATUI. SOME INTERESTING WORK. INSIDE GRASS IN DEMAND. PINK NOTE PLEASES. (Special to Times.) Dunedin, February 6. The morning was beautifully fine at Wingatui to-day and some interesting racing work took place. All the fast work was on the inside grass which trainers apparently favoured in. preference to the inside of the course proper. Fast work was commenced by Tardy and Meitui covering seven furlongs in Imin 32 4-ssees., and the latter seemed to have most in reserve at the finish. Pink Note with assistance galloped beyond a mile and a ..quarter. He began beyond the home turn with Pink Paper and was picked up at the mile post by Salmo Salar, Pink Note ran the nine furlongs in 2mins 2 secs., and strode along pleasingly

throughout the gallop. Salmo Salar also shaped well during his part of the task. Stealth, under a featherweight, and Money Mine travelled over seven furlongs in lmin. 32secs. Evening and Glenrowan were companions in a strong gallop untimed and Blue Metal and Nonchalance cast five furlongs behind in lmin. 4 2-ssecs. Royal Saxon (G. Feilding up) and Waving Corn reeled off half a mile in.sl 2-5-secs. Camisader and Sailing Home covered seven furlongs in lmin. 33secs. Town Major in a strong working gallop on the plough ran over five furlongs in lmin. 8 3-ssecs. Caterpillar went away from John Bradbury in the first three of five furlongs, but the latter finished on terms in lmin. 6 2-ssecs. with the last half mile taking 53 3-ssecs. Assemble and Captain’s Gift galloped five furlongs in lmin. 6 l-ssecs. Lilac (Paladin-Ada Merling) and Johnny Phar cast, four furlongs behind in 54secs. and El Boa recorded lmin. 7 2-ssecs. for five furlongs on the plough. Tembroney, Solmar, Pink Terrace, Oriflamb, Dubious, Circulation, Sudden Storm and others got through useful tasks. Red Heather was schooled over two flights of hurdles and gave an excellent display of quick hurdling. Academy required a vet's attention after racing at Tapanui and appears to have strained a lumbar muscle. Acceptances for the first day of the Dunedin Cup meeting, together with entries for the Trial Stakes, ami forfeits for the Dunedin Champagne Stakes are due to-day at 5 p.m. An unusually strong contingent of Riccarton horses is booked to race at the Dunedin Cup meeting. Pink Note is striding along freely in his work and looks in fine order, although a shade on the big side in condition. At present it is interesting to note that Night March and Paquito, first and second in the Melbourne Cup are booked to appear at Wingatui next week. Aspiring appears to be more frequently mentioned in connection with the Publicians Handicap than any other horse in the race. Six of the Dunedin Cup candidates are at present, engaged in the. Steward’s Handicap.
