OTAUTAU NOTES
CRICKET. (From Out Correspondent.) The Otautau Club was favoured with a Visit from a team from Messrs H. and J. Smith, Ltd., Invercargill, on Wednesday. Ihe visitors arrived one man short, and a substitute in the person of O’Shea, had to be lent for the occasion. Good weather was experienced, but both teams put up a very poor performance “Progressive” making 29 and Otautau 41 in the first innings, the pitch appearing to trouble the visitors, who used to playing on concrete’. linims (/) and Jenkins (8) were top-scorers for “Progressive,” while Fisher (8), Grieve (8) and Coulter (7) played well for Otautau. The visitors commenced a second innings and settled down to their game, compiling a total of 51 for six wickets before time was called. Of these O’Shea made 12, Timms 15 and Robertson 8. At the conclusion of the game the captain, Mr A. Fisher, expressed the indebtedness of the club to the visitors for giving them such an enjoyable game. His club was the only active one in the Western District, and they were dependent on the Invercargill clubs for a game. Although neither side had put up a very good showing that day, they had had a good sporting' game. Mr Timms, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the members of the Otautau Club for their hospitality and the day’s outing. His team was eagerly looking fot ward to the return match in Invercargill when they hoped to do better. Bowling. Porteous 21 v. A. Smith 17; W. Scatter 20 v. W. Porteous 6; J. Hall 14 v. J. Thomson 13; F. Hill 22 v. J. Scatter 4; Theo Walker 17 v. W. Seatter 15; L. Lumsden 30 v. F. Hill 4; Thomas Walker 21 v. Theo Walker 16; A. Smith 16 v. W. J. McCulloch 15; Theo Walker 22 v. G. Sinclair 16. Duncan Pairs: First round—J. Hall and W. Porteous scr beat J. Thomson and G. Sinclair 23—22 after a ( close game. In the second round H. Smyth and L. Lumsden (6) defeated A. Smith and W. Seatter 26—24. Personal. Misses Fraser and Campbell commenced their duties at the local school on Monday. Miss Isobel Elizabeth Brown and Master Colin Bruce Hope, pupils of this district, are to be congratulated on passing their Public Service examination. Master Geoffrey A. Rowan, another pupil was awarded a senior free place.
