CAUSE OF STRIFE

UNION OFFICIALS TAKEN TO TASK. Sydney, June 30. Mr Justice Beeby, giving judgment upon the claim by the waterside workers for a new award, declared that the union officials had fomented strife on the waterfront even more than the men themselves. The union’s policy was a danger to the community. Unfortunately the employers had gradually yielded to the conditions imposed by the men’s federation, and the position on the waterfront had become more difficult.

Mr Justice Beeby refused unconditional preference and provided penalties for breaches of the award which would enable the employers to come to the Court instead of yielding so frequently to union pressure. —Australian Press Association.
