AUSTRALIAN DUPED
OLD CONFIDENCE TRICK. LOSS OF £7OO IN AMERICA. San Francisco, June 14. Mr. William T. Hogan, aged 59, a wealthy retired Melbourne merchant, has sailed for Australia and home, poorer by £7OO as the result of a confidence trick. After striking up an acquaintance in a Sbn-Francisco hotel, a new-found friend lured Mr. Hogan across the bay to Oakland. There a fat wallet lay in a convenient spot, but, as they jointly retrieved it, the owner appeared. Mr. Hogan spurned a liberal reward. The third friend talked of an investment having a most attractive proposition. Later Mr Hogan permitted him to invst £7OO for him, and cabled his brother in Melbourne for an additional £6OO. His brother sent advice instead of money. “Now,” said Mr Hogan, “I’m «lad he did.”
