ROCKET CAR
SPEED OF 430 MILES AN HOUR. AN EXPENSIVE TOY. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Berlin, April 14. A director of the Opel Motor Company asserts that in yesterday’s trial the rocket car obtained a speed of 430 miles per hour for a few seconds. The rocket car resembles a racer except in a steel chamber at the rear containing twelve pipes whence the rockets are discharged. Pairs of pipes are connected with fuses which are linked to the switchboard and controlled by the driver. The rockets are discharged by an electric spark causing a sheet of flame to burst out, the car leaping forward with terrific speed enveloped in a smoke cloud. The drawback is that each rocket will cost a small fortune.—Australian Press Association,
