MATAURA NEWS

BIBLE CLASS SOCIAL. (From Our Correspondent.) The opening social of this year of the Mataura Bible Classes was held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall on Friday, there being a large attendance. The meeting opened with a hymn and prayer led by Rev. R. Mackie. The function took the form of a gift evening, each member bringing along some gift to assist the commissiat at the coming Easter Camp, such things as jam, pickles, preserved fruit, jelly crystals, etc., providing a fine array. The programme was in the capable hands of Mr. Alton Currie who kept things going with a swing. The main item of the evening was a competition to guess the contents of a dozen parcels. Some of the guesses must have been wide of the mark judging by the merriment caused when the parcels were opened and the contents displayed. The largest number of correct guesses was won by Misses M. Dickie and V. Marshall. Rev. R. Mackie gave a very helpful address and urged those present to consider others before themeelves and to make the most of the present opportunities. After a varied programme of games and a dainty supper had been handed round the evening terminated with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”

The Mataura Young Women’s District Committee intends holding on Easter camp for girls at Mataura this year, and an energetic committee has been working hard for some time and has arrangements well in hand. The camp committee will benefit greatly by the large number of gifts sent in to the gift evening. Registrations are coming to hand from various parts of the district, which promises well for a successful and profitable time at Easter. FISHING COMPETITION. The Mataura Angling Club held a very successful fishing competition over the weekend commencing from 2 o’clock on Saturday afternoon. The Mataura River was the popular ground for competitors,, and it was in excellent order and the weather was good for the occasion. Mr. H. Cotterell secured the largest fish —an pounder, w’hich was taken out of the Mat aura in the vicinity of Menzies Ferry. The popular lure in the competition was the Red Quit fly, and the Red Spinner fly. There was a large attendance of nonfishing members of the club at the weighin and the fish were distributed amongst them. The particulars of the competition were as follows: — Open competition, any stream, any legal bait:— E. Duncan (Mataura River) 50 fish, 47 lbs 1. W. Allison (Mataura River) 49 fish, 40 lbs 2. H.
