RUGBY FOOTBALL

PIONEER (GORE) CLUB. ANNUAL REPORT. The following report is to be presented at the annual meeting of the club this evening. Your committee has much pleasure in submitting the twenty-second annual report and balance-sheet. The season has been a most successful one, although none of the teams succeeded in annexing any of the trophies. All, however, played the game in a good sporting spirit. We take this opportunity of congratulating the Mataura Club on winning the first and second grade competitions and the High School team on winning the third grade. A pleasing feature of the season was the manner in which the players turned out to practice, the first grade team being particularly good. It was exceptional for a member of this team to be absent from a practice, and great praise is due to the coach (Mr F. M. Murray) and the captain (Mr A. Davidson) for the enthusiasm installed into the players. The second and third grade teams lost a lot of their enthusiasm as the season progressed, and your committee would like to impress on the players in these grades the necessity of carrying the training on right to the end of the season. The following players represented the club in the various Eastern District representative teams: —Messrs A. Davidson, F. Fitzgerald, G. Brown, \. Fitzgerald, W. F. Hay, T. Moffitt, M. Hoffman and J. Murtagh. Messrs Davidson and F. Fitzgerald played in every representative match (of which there were quite a number) during the season. During the season the club suffered severe losses through the transfer of members to other parts. Messrs D. Cronin, F. Fitzgerald and I. McKenzie removed from the district, and they were suitably farewelled and presented with small tokens to show the esteem in which they were held by their fellow-clubmates. As will be seen by the accompanying balancesheet, the finances of the club are in a particularly strong position, and great credit is due to the treasurer (Mr F. O’Kane) on the t position attained. The total subscriptions collected amounted to the remarkable sum of’£47 14/6, which is a record. As you are all aware, half the subscriptions are transferred to the insurance fund, and this account has now been built up to a strong position. Only one claim of £2 5/was required to be paid out of the fund, and the balance now standing at credit in the Invercargill Savings Bank is £5l 16/8. The general account is also in credit to the amount of £2O 19/8. In conclusion, the committee desires to thank all who assisted and supported the club during the season, especially the ladies, and again solicits their help and patronage for the incoming season.
