MOTOR ASSOCIATION

LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. A meeting of the Southland Motor Association was held in the Southland League Rooms last night, Mr J. R. Haigh presiding over a good attendance of members. A letter was received from the Southland County Council stating that it would attend to the painting of the handrails of bridges. The Southland Electric Power Board wrote stating that though the board did not hold itself responsible for painting poles, a member of the staff, Mr Crane, had undertaken the work himself.—Received. The Lake County Council wrote thanking the association for its endeavours to popularize the motor camping ground and stating that it would instal cold shower baths at an early date.—Received. The secretary reported that 19 new members had joined up with the association. Mr A. M. Macdonald reported that the Road Signs Committee had decided that road signs should be erected on the Inver-cargill-Fortrose road and suggested that the colour adopted be green and orange; also that the Otago Motor Association be written to asking that if they carry on with the Catlins—Maclennan road, they adhere to the same colour scheme which would then mark a through route. With reference to the visit of Canterbury farmers it was decided that the association assist by the outlay of a sum up to £lO to provide a char-a-bancs for the use of the visitors for one day. It was decided to write to the secretary’ of the County Council drawing attention to the bad state of the Bluff Road. The sports section reported that the beach racing on March 3 had proved a financial success and that a credit of £6 was in hand. Mr W. F. Sutton tendered his resignation from the association on account of the criticisms which had been levelled at him at the time of the beach races. The meeting went into committee and after the question was discussed a motion was brought forward that Mr Sutton reconsider his decision. After an expression of opinion by members Mr Sutton withdrew his resignation. It was resolved to get the opinion of a solicitor as to the association’s responsibility in the event of accidents and submit the results to the annual meeting.
