ANCIENT RELICS

SIXTEENTH CENTURY EXPEDITION. A GEORGIAN’S DISCOVERIES. (Rec. 9.40 p.m.) Managua (Nicaragua), March 25. Carters, a Georgian archaeologist, has discovered what are believed to be relics of an expedition conducted by Ferando de Soto in 1539. In that year de Soto with a goodly company set out from Tampa Bay in search of El Dorado. In 1541 he discovered the great Mississippi and crossed over’ to the Washita River, but his companions were decimated by disease and continual skirmishes with Indians, and all clues to the source of the treasure proved elusive. In 1542 de Soto died of fever and disappointment, the remnant of his expedition eventually reaching Mexico. The relics just discovered were found in an Indian mound. The item of principal interest is an iron sword.—A. and N.Z.
