SEAMAN RUNS AMOK

Dunedin at Apis on March 8 ran amok with a loaded rifle The ship’s hoses were freely used and other methods were of no avail till another seaman was slightly wounded in the arm by a rifle bullet. All other methods failing, says the Samoa Times, an endeavour was made to disarm the man by means of rifle fire, with the result that he was wounded and disarmed. He was immediately taken ashore to Apia Hospital and died the same evening from shock and haemorrhage. At the inquest the Coroner found that the course taken was necessary for the prevention of loss of life among other members of the ship’s company.
