The Oamaru Jockey Club’s Autumn meeting was brought to a conclusion at Wingatui to-day in fine but at times threatening weather. Light rain fell in Dunedin on Saturday morning, but it quickly cleared off and at Wingatui it was warm and at times oppressive. There was a very satisfactory attendance and the gate receipts for the day and from the source for two good days must have given the Oamaru J.C. a financial lift. The totalisator returns for the meeting were also up by over £ll.OOO, and with entries and acceptances satisfactory the fixture would yield pleasing results. The racing was interesting, but hardly as keen as on the opening day. Mr A. D. Mclvor started both galloping and light harness races very successfully. On the strength of what looked like an easy win on the opening day Hard Prince was made a warm favourite for the Pacific Hurdles carrying four hundred and forty chances more than Beauty Light (J. Kerr) with Red Heather sixty-four supporters off in third place, while Scion and Coastguard were the neglected outsiders of the field. Red Heather and Hard Prince crossed the first two fences together, then the former ran to the front from Scion and Hard Prince, while Beauty Light was being hard ridden at the head of the others some distance away. At the second to last and final obstacles Scion looked like catching the leader. On the flat Red Heather (E. Mackie) stayed on best to win very easily by a length and a half from Scion (Boniform —Lady Jean II.) (A. Ruthven), with Beauty Light (J. Kerr) four lengths off third, three lengths ahead of Coastguard, then came Hard Prince and Adjutor. The winner had matters all his own wayin the straight as Scion tired and the others were too far away to make any impression on J. Thistleton’s fine jumper. Scion is rapidly improving as a hurdler and is likely to win over the battens in the near future. A rise of 121 b in the weights and his first day’s exertions appeared to effect-

ually settle Hard Prince, who could not go the pace set in the back stretch. BeautyLight ran better than on Friday.

L>r The Shorts, Meadow Lark (A. E. Eire) was sent out first in order of selection carrying eight chances more than Karitane, with Tardy over two hundred and sixty supporters off in third place, while there was strong fancy for Some Signal and Felony and Phastar commanded attention. At the start All Smiles was cut out and lost her chance. The first to show out were Karitane, Phastar and Some Signal. Racing to the far turn Some Signal ran to the front and led up the hill and into the straight from Phastar, Karitane, Tardy and Meadow Lark. Some Signal was beaten at the distance and Phastar took command, but Karitane quickly headed him off, then Tardy ran up on the rails. In a nice finish Karitane, by Tractor—Guizark (S. Wilson) won by a long neck from Tardy (F. Voight), with Phastar (P. Powell) a length off third, while Felony was two lengths off fourth, attended by Some Signal and Green Cloth.

The winner, who first attracted attention at the Tapanui meeting, has improved since then and may presently win again for F. Shaw’s stable. Tardy, who has been expected to win a race for some time past, had a considerable amount of ground to make up from the distance and nearly accomplished the task by finishing fast. The two-year-old, Phastar, who was bred in Australia, ran well for five furlongs. Some Signal led clear into the straight, but faded out promptly at the distance. Felony put in a fair run into fourth place. Meadow Lark was always close to the leaders, but retired below the distance and was not persevered with. Rhondda displayed speed by the way, but was not sighted in the run in. King Balboa was very heavily supported for the Buckley Memorial Handicap to carry nearly nine hundred and forty chances more than Wingatui (B. Brodie), with Overhaul one hundred and fifty-four friends away, well clear of Heather Lad. King Balboa was the early leader, but Fain- Herald joined him and just showed out at the far turn. Running up the hill King Balboa drew out again to lead Wingatui and Heather Lad into the straight with Fairy Herald dropping back. A little further on Wingatui faded out and Overhaul ranged up. In a keen run to the judge King Balboa (L. J. Ellis) won cleverly by a neck from Overhaul (J. Andrews), who beat Heather Lad (A. E. Didham) by a short neck for second place, Wingatui five lengths off fourth, while Fairy Herald was easing up in the rear. It was a fairly easy effort for King P-alboa as he was only ridden in the last half-dozen strides in a fast run contest. Overhaul was staying on well over the last furlong. The winner returned a short price, as he was supported from far and near. For the Weston Trot Handicap, Sunfish (A. McLellan) was elected first fancy, carrying five hundred and eighty-one chances more than John Dee (T. Wallis) with Streak three hundred and twenty-five supporters off in third place, while Needles was eighty friends further away in fourth position. At the start Red Shiner, Tribute, and Merrigal lost their chances. Sunfish led Malice past the stands, but Needles paced to the front going to the back to be joined by Drake in the far stretch, then came Sunfish. On the far side John Dee tangled badly and lost his chance. Two furlongs from home Sunfish was beaten and Needles

just led Drake into the straight, where Streak came fast from the rear. In a slogging finish the Oamaru-Jrained Streak by Bon Patch —Satinwood mare (L. C. Row--lands) prevailed by half a length from Needles (J. Walsh) with Drake (C. Flockton) a neck away third, Sunfish well back fourth, followed by Cardinal and Blue. The winner from North Otago returned a nice price to a select following, who were very loyal to a promising stayer. Needles paced a solid race and was under pressure the whole length of the straight. Drake, who was driven by one of the veterans of the South Island turf, very nearly succeeded in returning a lengthy price either way. Sunfish paced well, until a punctured wheel proved too much for him. The trouble was caused by another horse. Times—3.3B 3-5, 3.35, 3.39 1-5. The owner of John Dee (Mr C. Mead) was fined £1 for faulty gear, which broke and caused the horse to tangle and lose his chance in the race. Apple Dighton was first in order of selection for the Stewards Handdicap, carrying two hundred chances more than Solrose, with Money Mine in third place nearly eight hundred and ninety supporters away. From a good start Solrose was first to break the line from Money Mine and. Apple Dighton. Before the far turn was reached Apple Dighton was four lengths clear, then came Solrose, Money Mine and Dismantle. When the straight was reached Apple Dighton was still in front, but Solrose ran past him below the distance and Money Mine moved up. Galloping on strongly, Solrose (A. E. Ellis) won easily by two lengths from Apple Dighton (E. Busbridge), with Money Mine iL. J. Ellis) half a length off third, Brightling three lengths back fourth, followed by Dismantle. Apple Dighton ran to the straight as if he w r ould be “hard to beat, but Solrose simply strolled aw% over the last furlong. Money Mine ran a fair race and Brightling ran from last to fourth place in the straight. For the Windsor Handicap, Quickform was elevated to the position of a firm first selection, carrying nearly five hundred chances more than Antrim Boy, with Carinthia about eighty supporters off next in demand, six friends ahead of Karitane. Carinthia was first to appear in view, attended by Antrim Boy and Valves. After rounding the far turn Valves showed out from Carinthia and Antrim Boy. Leading into the ■ straight Valves, by Tractor — Bothena (E. Busbridge) won by a neck from Antrim Boy (J. Andrews), with Karitane (D. Kerr) half a length off third, Carinthia three lengths off fourth, then came Little Duchess. Karitane was well back at the home turn and put in a brilliant run to get up for third money. The winner displayed smart form on the opening day after getting away very badly and many backers remembered this fact to the tune of a double figure price. Antrim Boy ran fairly well and is evidently improving, but he is not yet a champion by any means. The Invercargill-owned Trusty Child was most in demand for the Pukeuri Trot, carrying twenty five chances fore than Belle Embrace (L. Morrison), with Logan Brae I J. McLennan) fifty-four friends away in third berth, five followers ahead of Nihilist Junr., while there was good money for Drake and Dan Huon. Kola Wilkes and Tribute failed to leave promptly and Hereweka and Spring Flower presently tangled badly by the way. Belle Embrace headed off Trusty Child and showed the way round the far turn with Nihilist Junr. pacing through the field very fast. Approaching the home turn Nihilist Junior moved past Trusty Child and closed on Belle Embrace. Leading into the home stretch Nihilist Junior (P. Gallagher) went on to win comfortably by three lengths from Drake (T. Wallis), with Trusty Child (S. Todd) four lengths off third, then came Dan Huon. The brother to that good horse Nihilist had the race won a long way from the judge, although Drake put in a good run in the straight. Logan Brae was never dangerous and it looks as if he is going to be a very expensive horse to somebody. Trusty Child was tiring over the last two furlongs.
