WOOLLEN INDUSTRY
CANADIAN TARIFF CHANGES. DEBATE IN PARLIAMENT. Ottawa, March 23. The budget which changes the tariff on woollens brought sharp criticism in the House of Commons. Mr Bennett, Tory leader, alleged that the tariff seemed to be moulded by Huddersfield and Bradford, rather than by Canadians for Canada. Mr. Hugh Guthrie expressed resentment at what he termed the interference of Yorkshire mill men. Mr Robb, Minister of Finance, remarked that there were instances where Canadian manufacturers made representations to the British Government and similar movements had been made by the Governments of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia in efforts to obtain privileges in these markets. The debate showed that the woollen industry was not prosperous. He defended the course followed by the Government, giving greater concessions to raw material.—A. and N.Z.
