AMERICAN NAVY

“REPLACEMENT” PROGRAMME. PROVISIONS OF BILL. (Rec. 7.10 p.m.) Washington, February 19. Representative Britten predicts that the House Naval Affairs Committee will agree on the replacement building programme. He says that the Bill will probably provide for 25 cruisers to replace 22 obsolete ships, five aircraft carriers and 35 submarines, all to be completed by 1936. “The programme before us,” he says, “is almost entirely one of replacement. I believe our annual deep sea commerce of 20,000,000,000 dollars fully justifies the precautions which this programme will provide.” Mr. Britten states that the Bill will not provide for destroyer leaders, but the Navy Department may later request appropriations for nine such vessels.—A. and N.Z.
