ANOTHER OF THEM
DRUNKEN MOTORIST CONVICTED. Henry George Lawrence, a young man twenty-two years of age, was charged in the Police Court on Saturday morning with being intoxicated while in charge of a car. Mr. Gordon Reed, who appeared on behalf of the accused, entered a plea of guilty. Sergeant Fox in explaining the circumstances of the case said that at 2.45 a.m. on Saturday a constable on night duty heard a car bumping along Dee street. He had followed the car until it stopped near the Government buildings in Esk street. The driver was in such a state of intoxication that he did not know that the front right hand wheel had its tyre missing. From inquiries made it was learnt that the car had collided with a gate at Waikiwi two hours earlier. The driver was a decent sort of youth and there was the fortunate circumstance that no one was injured. On the other hand the courts throughout the Dominion were viewing such crimes very seriously.
The accused was fined £2 and had his license suspended until March 31, 1928.
