She brought 200 bags of mail. The ketch Waterlily returned from a fishing trip to the West Coast yesterday with about four tons of fish. The tug Theresa Ward made her usual weekly trip to Stewart Island yesterday with a few passengers. The Misses Petersen returned by her to Half Moon Bay after a lengthy absence. The lonic arrived at Dunedin on Tuesday from Lyttelton. She will sail on Saturday next for Bluff to complete discharge of her London cargo and commence Homeward loading. The Karetu is scheduled to sail for Sydney, via Port Craig, this afternoon. The Wingatui, with cargo from Auckland, was expected to leave Wellington yesterday for Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff. She should arrive here about Tuesday next. The coastal steamer Oreti is scheduled to sail from Dunedin to-day for Invercargill and Port Craig. The S.S. and A. steamer Athenic arrived at Wellington on Tuesday from Brisbane to commence Homeward loading. The New Zealand Steam Ship Company’s steamer Remuera is scheduled to sail from Auckland to-morrow afternoon for Southampton and London, via Panama. Captain A. E. Jackson is in command of the lonic, which is due at Bluff on Sunday from London, via northern ports.

The Union Company advises that the Waihemo is expected to leave Lyttelton today for Timaru, Dunedin, Bluff and New Plymouth to discharge the remainder of her general cargo from Pacific Coast ports. She is due here about July 21 or 22. The Sussex, from Newcastle, was due at Sourabaya on July 8. She wall proceed thence to Samarang and Calcutta, and is due at the latter port about July 25. The vessel will load there and complete at other Eastern ports for New Zealand ports, and should clear Calcutta early next month. Cabled news has been received by the New Zealand Shipping Company that its chartered steamer Walcheren arrived at Newport News on July 3 from Montreal, en route to New Zealand ports. An arrival at Auckland on Sunday morning was rhe American steamer West Henshaw, from Pacific Coast ports. She has 1,250,000 ft of lumber and 1,000 tons of case oil and general cargo for Auckland, as well as cargo for discharge at Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. MOERAKI DELAYED. The Union Company advises that the Moeraki is now scheduled to leave Melbourne to-morrow at 10 a.m. for Bluff direct. She is due here on Tuesday next. WARSHIP SPEEDS. The steam trials of the Spanish cruiser Principe Alfonso, which took place recently, are reported to have been very successful. A run of four hours’ duration at full power resulted in a mean output of 83,000 shaft horse-power and a speed of 34 knots, the maximum speed being 34.7 knots. As the contract called for 80,000 shaft horse-power and 33 knots, this performance was highly creditable. The Principe Alfonso is now claimed by the Spanish Press to be the swiftest cruiser in the world. Her only possible rival is the U.S. Omaha, which is reputed to have developed 94,290 shaft horse-power and 34.87 knots on a trial run early in 1923. The point could only be settled by determining how far the draft of each vessel at the time of the trials corresponded to the legend displacement. The two ships of the Principe Alfonso class were designed by the late Sir Philip Watts and were probably the last warships for the plans of which he was responsible. CANADIAN GOVERNMENT LINE. Advice has been received that the Canadian National Railways intends to build

six new passenger steamers for the Can-ada-West Indies trade, bringing the Canadian Government Mercantile Marine fleet up to 54 steamers. The new vessels will be used in conjunction with the railway system. Several of the Line’s vessels have been altered recently to meet the growing demand for passenger accommodation. The Canadian Skirmisher and the Canadian Pathfinder, both well-known in New Zealand waters, have been converted into oilburners. Each vessel will now accommodate 50 first and 32 second-class passengers. PORT OF ANTWERP. Antwerp, having first place among the Continental ports for exports and imports, is now improving its facilities for handling trans-Atlantic passengers in a manner to place it on an even footing in that respect with other European ports. Beginning with the arrival of the Red Sea liner Belgenland on June 4 from New York, Antwerp now has regular trains from Quai du Rhin, where the Red Star liners dock, to Brussels, the run being made in less than 40 minutes. Close connections are made at Brussels with through expresses for Paris, the Rhine Valley, Switzerland and Italy, and to Vienna and other Central European cities. The run to Paris is made in less than four hours. WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE. The following vessels were expected to be within wireless range of the undermentioned stations last evening:— Auckland.—Maunganui, Pleiodon, Aorangi, Waitemata, Baron Minto, City of Corinth, Pulpit Point, Cambridge.
