OPPOSITION IN NEW SOUTH WALES. DAILY HIRING SYSTEM ADVOCATED. Sydney, July 12. The Council of the Metal Trades Employers’ Association has decided to recommend to its members the adoption of a daily hiring scheme with the payment of existing rates for overtime. The secretary of the association states that under this system tradesmen would receive £5 19/6 for a forty-four hours’ week against £5 5/- at present. Meantime, the Engineering Union is endeavouring to obtain the support of the allied unions in the coming fight against piecework.—A. and N.Z.
