BRITISH BETTING TAX

NEW BILL PASSED. London, June 15. The House of Commons passed all the clauses of the Bill dealing with betting.— A. and N.Z. Under the provisions of the Betting Tax Bill bookmakers will have to take out an annual certificate at a fee of £lO and another for premises. The tax of 5 per cent, is payable on every bet made with a bookmaker from November 1 next, and drastic penalties are provided for evasion. In the course of his Budget speech Mr Churchill estimated that the tax would produce £1,500,000 this vear and £6,000,000 in a .full year.
