THE CIVIC BAND
NEW ORGANISATION. FIRST APPEARANCE SHORTLY. To-night the first general meeting of active and honorary members of the recently formed Civic Band will be held. During its short existence the new organisation has made rapid and vigorous strides along the road of improvement, so much so that the conductor, Mr A. R. Wills, who so successfully controlled the late Hibernian Band, is confident that his new charge is well-nigh efficient enough to make its first public appearance. This question will be considered at this evening’s meeting, when, in addition to the matter of procuring uniforms, a suggestion to giVe a concert in the Municipal Theatre, at the end of the month will be considered. To date indications are that the Civic Band will shortly be a power in the musical life of the town and Dominion. With only one or two exceptions the various sections are all filled, but the most promising feature is the fact that a learners’ class of 36 players has been organised and has settled down to practice with an enthusiasm which provides a hopeful augury for the future. They will be drafted into the band as occasion and efficiency demands, but it is Mr Wills’s hope to form a junior organisation also.
