SHARP PRACTICES
ELECTIONS AND DOLLARS ASTOUNDING ALLEGATIONS THE YANKEE WAY. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Rec. 11.5 p.m.) Washington, June 12. An amazing picture of American political corruption has been drawn by witnesses before the Senate Investigation Committee which is inquiring into the expenditure of nearly a million and a half dollars by candidates in the recent primary elections at Pennsylvania which resulted in the choice of Mr V..re. Primary elections under the American Lw provide for a poll among the aspirants for nomination for office at which only x gularly enrolled members of the party cast a vote. One witness declared that one aspirant had 35,000 so-called “watchers” in one district, each of which received ten dollars, while the total vote cast, for this aspirant in that district was less than 50,000. Witness said that when.the time for paying off came, it was like a rush on a bank. Other witnesses told of voters being helped to mark the ballots; of armed men brought in; of tear gas bombs used, and every conceivable form of malpractice used. —A. & N.Z.
