CAR BURNT
A CLOSE SHAVE PLUNGE OVER STEEP SLOPE DRIVER JUST GETS CLEAR. (Per United Press Association.) Naw Plymouth, April 6. An Auckland party returning from a trip to Taranaki met with an accident at Mount Messenger this afternoon which resulted in the loss by fire of their car and a narrow escape for the driver, S. Ringer. The party were in a big touring car and on climbing one of the steep sections on the New Plymouth side of the mountain flames were seen issuing from the car. Two of the occupants, Messrs L. Hardley, the owner, and F. Reid, jumped out in an endeavour to suppress the flames. Ringer put on the emergency brake, which, however, would not hold and the car started to go down hill and over the side. Ringer managed to jump clear and the car went hurtling down to the bottom of the valley —a sheer drop of 200 feet. With it went all the luggage, which was consumed in the fire that completely destroyed the car. The party had a narrow escape, for had they not got out in time they must have been dashed to death. The party were afterwards brought into town by a service bus.
