SUBMARINE WARFARE

NEW TORPEDO TACTICS. “LEGITIMATE WEAPON.” London, Feb. 24. A revolution in submarine tactics, enabling mass attacks by the launching of scores of torpedoes simultaneously, thus necessitating sweeping changes in naval operations, is likely to be the result of the American Navy’s solution of the problem of underwater communication, says the naval correspondent of the Daily News. Preliminary tests established direct telephonic communication for two miles, with a possibility of the range being greatly extended. The system is based on inaudible or super-tonic sound-waves, projected through the water and enabling the commodore of a submarine flagship to direct the movements of his flotilla with the same ease as the Admiralty manoeuvres a battleship fleet. It is believed that the invention will enable submarines to become a legitimate weapon, outliving the odium they acquired owing to attacks on merchantmen.—Sun Special.
