MARIST CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Marist Club was held in the Y.M.C.A. last night, when Mr C. Davis presided over an attendance of about 40 members. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report was as follows:—The Committee have much pleasure in presenting the annual report and balance-sheet for the season ending March 16, 1925. Owing to the divided half-holiday at present in vogue, the Club has not had a very successful year. A senior team was entered in the Wednesday competition, but the Rugby Union decided to abandon the Wednesday senior competition, with the result that having to enter the Saturday competition, we were without the services of some of the best players. The senior XV, though i not successful in its grade, played a high ; standard of Rugby, but this coming season we should like to see more attention paid to training by members. Both the Saturday and Wednesday second grade teams had a fair measure of successes. The fourth grade, we are pleased to say, were successful in winning their competition. We wish to congratulate the members of the fourth grade and their coach, the Rev. Bro. Tarcissius, on their fine performance. At the beginning of the season, a friendly game was played against Heddon Bush, at Heddon Bush, and a fifteen travelled to. Timaru at Easter to play the Celtic Club. Owing to the threatening railway strike, a strong team could not be mustered, with the result that Celtic had a substantial win. We must thank the Celtic Club for the fiA manner in which they entertained the team whilst in Timaru. During the season, a most enjoyable social and dance was held in the Victoria Hall. The senior members of the Club entertained the fourth grade team at a banquet, in honour of their winning their grade competition. Two successful smoke concerts were also held. It is with deep regret that we have to record the death of Mr John McMullan, who for many years was a popular secretary to the Club. During his connection with the Club, he was always a cheerful and willing worker in the interests of the Club. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family in their sad loss. We also extend our sympathy to Mr M. J. Kilkelly in the loss of his wife. The Committee wish to place on record, the appreciation of members of the fine work done by the Rev. Bro. Tarcissius, among the juniors. Our thanks are due to Mr Davis for the handsome trophy donated for friendly competition, to all supporters and to the Press. In conclusion, we wish all members the best of luck for the coming season. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £3 13/7. The President in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, stated that though the Club had not been very successful in the competition, it had played good football and should have done better. No doubt the divided half-holiday had made a difference, as it meant the loss of some of the Club’s best players, but still the principal reason seemed to be lack of training, and it was to be hoped that more attention would be paid to this in the present year. Mr H. Grace in seconding the report also stressed the necessity of continued practice, and said that that was the main reason of the Club’s downfall in the previous season. The report was carried unanimously. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: — President: Mr P. Gilfedder. Patron: Rev. Father Martin. Vice-Presidents: Messrs P. Scully, H. Grace, F. G. {/Beirne, A. Fitzgerald, F. C. Jarvis. F. Boyle, F. Fraser, Rev. Father Marlow, J. J. Ward, J. P. Butler, B. Timpany, M. Miller, M. Francis, T. Anthony, G Martin, D. Aitken, C. Davis, M. Lyons,

A. Pascoe, J. Ferry, A. R. Mills, M. Woods, E. Sheehan, A. Driscoll, P. Forde, T. Crookes.

Secretary and Treasurer: Mr B. Mahoney. Club Captain: Mr H. Grace. Delegates to S.R.F.U.: Messrs H. Grace, M. Francis, and C. Davis. General Committee: Messrs Kelly, Coakley, Crookes, Davis, Blee, Walsh, Wills and the coaches. GENERAL BUSINESS. A number of new members were elected. The question of the opening day was left in the hands of the Committee with power to act. The subscriptions for the year were fixed at 5/- for the first and second grade teams and 2/6 for the juniors, with the lower grades being admitted free. The matter of training nights was left in the hands of the secretary to arrange. It was decided to instruct the secretary to forward an invitation to the Celtic Football Club, Timaru, asking them to play a match at Invercargill during Easter. It was also decided to instruct the delegates to the S.R.F.U. to vote in favour of the Transfer Rule as at present constituted. CLUB REPRESENTATION. Mr J. Shepherd stated that he had noticed that at the annual meeting of the Invercargill Club, it was stated that the Marist Club were bringing forward a resolution to the annual meeting of delegates supporting direct representation of Clubs on the Rugby Union. It would also seem from the remarks of various speakers that the Marist Club wished to oust the present Union. He would like to state that no responsible member of the Club had ever brought forward such a motion, nor had the Club any grievance against the Union. Mr H. Grace also spoke, and said that he was sure such a thing had never been discussed by • members of the Club, and that they were all quite satisfied with the treatment they had received from the Union. After the customary votes of thanks to the retiring officers and the Chair, the meeting adjourned. LUMSDEN CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. (From our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Lumsden Football Club was held on Thursday. There was an attendance of about 40, and the President, Mr W. Clark, was in the chair. ANNUAL REPORT. Th# report stated that the 1924 season of the Club was the most successful and the most unique in the history of the Club. The seniors were successful in wanning Bedford-Compton Shield and also won the seven aside tournament at Lumsden and Balfour. The juniors won the Gee-Chap-man Shield and also the seven aside at Lumsden and Balfour. Thus our two teams won practically all the competitions in the northern district. The school boys further added to these honours by winning the, Christie Cup after a strenuous tussle with the Balfour team. More systematic training should be done by the teams this year if they wish to retain the Shields as no doubt they will have some strenuous opposition for this honour. During the season the sports bodies conducted a Queen Carnival and the sum of over £lOOO was raised for the improving of the recreation ground. Of this sum the footballers raised the splendid sum of £430 7s and w T ere successful in putting their princess at the top of the poll. The recreation ground is now being improved and this season the Club is faced with the problem of finding a new ground and making it into a suitable playing area for this year’s fixtures. It is to be hoped that all members will co-operate in this matter. The membership last season totalled 64 paid up members which is the highest for some years. The credit balance showed a credit of £9 0s Id, which was considered very satisfactory. The finances this season require careful handling as we may have

to depend on collections instead of making a charge at the gate. Those players who represented the northern district were J. Crawford, G. Alley, N. Crosbie, G. Cunningham, J. McCann, G. Tomlin in the senior grade, and in the junior grade W. Clark, R. Smith, W. Wellmann, F. Small, W. Crosbie, F. Menzies and F. Earl. The thanks of the Club are due to the members who worked so hard during the season to make it a successful one, to those who kindly provided cars for travelling and to the public for their general support. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet the President (Mr W. Clark) congratulated the teams on their splendid record and hoped that the Club would continue in this flourishing manner. This was seconded by Mr J. T. Nelson and carried. The election of officers resulted as follows : President: Mr J. S. Nelson. Vice-Presidents: Messrs W. Clark, A. Hall, J. Isaacs, T. Small, M. Crawford, A. Leitch, Alex. McAlister, H. Casson, J. Crawford, and G. Johnson. Secretary: Mr W. Johnson. Coach: Mr J. V. Clark. Club Captain: Mr J. Crawford. Management Committee: J. Crawford, T. Small, Jno. Crawford, A. Small, J. Ogilvy, F. Belisky, Alex. McAlister and G. Johnson. Delegates to Sub-Union: Messrs T. Small and W. Clark. Selection Committee: First grade, Messrs T. Small, J. Crawford and Jno. Crawford; second grade, Messrs W. Clark, captain and deputy-captain. OTHER BUSINESS. The membership fee was fixed at 5s per member. The conveyance arrangements to be as last year. Juniors to pay maximum sum of 5s per trip balance to be paid by the Club. Grounds. —It was d ecided to secure grounds on Mr G. F. Johnson’s property. Permission has already been granted and the Chairman, secretary, Mr T. Small and Mr Clark were instructed to select a suitable area. Opening Day.—The opening day was fixed for Saturday, March 21, when a full practice will be held. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the retiring President, Mr W. Clark, who had broken a lot of hard ground for the incoming officers. Mr Clark briefly responded and assured the members that the new President would have his whole hearted assistance. After a hearty vote of thanks to the chair a most enthusiastic meeting closed. THE MATAURA CLUB. REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. The following report and balance-sheet will be submitted to the annual meeting of the Mataura Football Club:— Your Committee has pleasure in submitting the annual report and balance-sheet to members. We have to congratulate the first fifteen on again winning the Wallace Shield. The team went through the competition without defeat until the last game, which after a strenuous battle was won by Seaward Downs. Altogether eight games were played, seven being won, and one lost. The total points scored by the team was 87, with 30 points registered against it. The second-grade team played well throughout its competition, and were in the running right up to the last round. They played 11 games, winning five, losing five and drawing one. The points they scored were 45 for, and 47 against. Our thirdgrade team was not so successful, and experienced some difficulty in getting a team together for the various matches. The result was that they defaulted on several occasions and were declared out of the competition. The trouble is, no doubt, due to the weekly half-holiday not being universal.

Our Club was the only one in the Eastern District that gained representation in the Southland team, and we congratulate Mr Bruce Scott on again being selected in the

team, and also for his selection to play in the trial match for the All Black team. We were also represented in the Eastern District representative teams by Messrs T. Wilson, C. Henry, J. Broome, Bruce Scott, N. McLeod, J. Duncan, T. Hicks, A. Todd, and R. Cullen, who all gave a good account of themselves. Mr T. Wilson was also selected to play in the trials for the Southland team for which he was chosen as an emergency. In the Eastern District second grade representatives the Club was represented by Messrs J. Shepherd, J. Phillips and V. Henry. The balance-sheet disclosed a very satisfactory position, there being a credit of £22 10/10 in the general account, while the Insurance Account shows a balance of £3 11/- in hand, making a total of £26 1/10 to start off the new season with. Several accidents were met with during the season, and the sum of £24 1/6 was paid out in claims to injured players. The membership of the Club dropped considerably from the previous year, the figures being 108 seniors, and 11 juniors, against 177 seniors and 13 juniors in 1923. probably be accounted for by the lack of interest in the competition during the season. £ We would again impress upon the playing members the necessity for turning out regularly to practice, and we hope to be able to put good teams into the field for the competitions in the approaching season. In conclusion we wish to thank all members of the Club fori their continued support, also those who made donations to the Club’s funds. We are indebted to Mr C. D. McConnell for the use of his store for practice and meetings, and we trust that the 1925 season will be a very successful one for the Club and for football generally in the Eastern District.
