DARING BANDITS

HOLD-UPS IN NEW YORK. RAIDS ON BANKS. ESCAPE WITH LARGE SUMS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) NEW YORK, March 14. (Received March 15, 5.5 p.m.) Three sensational robberies occurred in the Metropolitan district to-day, which for daring have not lately been rivalled. Three bandits entered the Tuckahoe, New Jersey, Bank, and shot and mortally wounded the Vice-President, bound the cashier and his wife and seized a bag containing 6000 dollars.

They attempted to escape in an automobile, which zig-zagged on to a tree stump in a country road and was wrecked. A posse of enraged citizens, including men and women, trailed the robbers to the woods and surrounded them, and after a gun battle the bandits surrendered, one being wounded. Some 5500 dollars were recovered. Four robbers entered a business office in Long Island City, smashed the faces of the paymaster and treasurer with their revolver butts, stole an 8000 dollars pay roll and escaped in an automobile. A passer-by gave chase but his effort was futile as the car was soon lost in the maze of traffic.

Six robbers held up an. automobile carrying the paymaster and a book-keeper from a bank with 4500 dollars for the pay roll of employees in a textile mill in Trenton, New Jersey. They seized the funds and escaped in a motor which quickly out-dis-tanced the victim’s machine.
