ROWING

(By '

“Stroke.”)

Activities in local Club circles have practically ceased, but the Railway and Riverton representatives are in hard training for Otago and Port Chalmers. The crews will leave for Dunedin on Friday, March 20, and the good wishes of all Southland rowing men will go with them. THE RAILWAY MEN. Senior Fours: The crew is in even better condition than when last seen in regatta work. Every man is fit and deterj mined to uphold the honour of Southland. The four have now gained excellent combination and have 'developed a sure breakaway and snappy style. They will be hard to beat. Maiden Division: Maiden rowers will be represented in all classes and the men are going well. The pairs will, however, only row at Dunedin in the Otago events. Youths’ Fours: This crew is a little behind in their work but another week should , see them well in line. The two man must i bear in mind that the stroke has to be i correctly finished, otherwise he is going | well. . Railway will not enter in the Senior Sculls class. A PERTINENT QUESTION. i Why is it that the Southland Association ■ did not nominate a representative for the ' All Black eight. It seems an extraordinary ! thing that no one considered it worth while I to gain representative honours for the pro- ; vince, and one is forced to the conclusion • that the Association has ceased to interest I itself in Dominion rowing matters. It have • heard, on the very best authority, that I there was every chance of a Southlander being included, had one been nominated, as the prowess of several of the local men was well known in the North, and compared very favourably with many of the eight who were originally selected to row in Aussie. Again, no less than four of the original crew were unable to travel, and j ftur were selected to take their place. ■ What a chance for Southland! Yet—no, nothing was done. Those who should have acted, seemed asleep, and an ideal chancr to forward the interests of the province in athletic circles has been lost.
