INVERCARGILL CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. At the annual meeting of the Invercsrgil’ Cricket Club last evening, Mr J. A. Doig presided over a fair attendance of members. Apologies for absence were received from T. R. Abercrombie, P. McCallum, E. A. Vial, and G. Corbett. In speaking to the annual report and balance-sheer (already published), the Chairman stated that the juniora were to be most heartily congratulated on the manner in which they had played last year. He felt sure that they would do even better this season, as they had some very promising players. The divided half-holiday had affected the senior team, and it had been unable to get a really strong eleven either on the Wednesday or Saturday. It was hoped, however, that the incoming season would be more satisfactory, and they were looking forward to having a really good time. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: Patrons: Messrsc T. D. Kingsland, H. F. Drewe, and G. F. Watson; President: R. A. Anderson; Vice-Presidents: The Mayor (Mr A. Bain), Dr Mac Gibbon, F. St. G. Loughnan, Eustace Russdl, C. Gray, D. W. McKay, J. McLeod, W. Henderson, R. B. Caws, R. Deacon, R. M. Strang, and A. Calder; club captain: A. Abercrombie; Committee: P. McCallum, C. Traill, F. Goodsir, E. Cook, E. H. Vial, Dr Brown; delegates to the Association: G. Corbett and E. Cook; secretary: N. Weir; treasurer: L. Bell; Material Committee: C. Traill, J. Gilbertson, Dr Brown; Selection Committee: club captain, and captains of the Wednesday and Saturday teams. It was decided to hold the opening day on Wednesday, Qrtober 8. The deiegat-es to the Association were instructed to oppose the motion that primary schoolboys be not allowed to play club cricket. The Chairman stated that he could see no objection to primary school players playing with junior clubs. Some of the older players took a keen interest in the boys, who received instruction which they would not receive in school cricket. Dr Brown stated that it would be a great pity if schoolboys were not allowed to play in junior cricket. He thought, however, that they should not be allowed to play in senior grades, as when opposed to players above their grade they were apt to lose their confidence, and this would do them a great deal of harm. He would also like to see the various clubs undertake the “coaching” of primary school teams.

It was decided to instruct the delegates to bring the question of ‘"coaching” school teams before the annual meeting of the Association.

Appreciative reference was made to the services given to the Club by Mr L. Bell in his position of treasurer. Several new members were elected. MARIST OLD BOY’S CLUB, ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report for the season 1923-24 is as follows: The past season has been the most successful one in the history of the club, all grades showing distinct improvement and attaining positions which augur well for the future. Both Saturday and Wednesday seniors put up good performances, particularly the latter, who were runners-up to Union in the Wednesday section, being beaten in the final by the small margin of 3 nins. Appleby C.C. was again successful in annexing the Mercantile Shield and to them we offer our hearty congratulations. Although our juniors were not successful in winning their competition, they must be congratulated on their performances and the splendid club spirit existing in their ranks. During the season our worthy club mate Mr Alf Driscoll by brilliant batting notched ovey’ 1000- runs, 7 his scores including three centuries, and to mark his unique performance he was entertained by members of the club and presented with a silver cup suitably inscribed. We offer Mr Driscoll our hearty congratulations on his brilliant performance. The bowling honours for the season go to Messrs Walsh, Nisbet and Driscoll, whole fine trundling was responsible for most of the seasonis wickets.

Your Committee wish to place on record their appreciation of the valuable services and assistance rendered to the club and Southland cricket by our friend and club mate, Mr M. Staunton. Nothing m the interests of the “Grand Old Game” was too small or too large for Mr Stanton to undertake, and to him we offer our heartfelt thanks. Unfortunately, during the season Mr Stanton had to leave us for the north for health reasons, but prior to his departure the members in recognition of his services took the occasion to make him a suitable presentation. It is pleasing to note that Mr Stanton’s efforts and the interest in the game was recognised by other than his own club also, as he was the recipient of tokens of esteem from other clubs in Southland. We are pleased to see him back with us once more, improved in health and taking the same keen interest in the game. We also wish to congratulate the following members who represented their province in the past season:—Messrs Kilby, Duthie, Driscoll and Kavanagh. Mr F. Kilby must be specially congratulated on winning his Cap as last season was his first year in senior cricket. As shown by the balance sheet the club financially is in a fairly good position, showing a big improvement on the previous season. Our thanks are due to the officials and supporters of the club for the encouragement given during the season; to the Rev. Bro. Tarcissius and Marist Brothers who have at all times given of their best to promote the welfare of the club, especially the juniors; to the Southland Cricket Association for the very able manner in which it has controlled Southland cricket; to our delegates to the S.CA., Messrs Stokes and Driscoll for the time given and the worthy manner in which they represent us on that body; to those gentlemen who unselfishly came forward to umpire our games, and also to the Press.
