BOXING.
THE NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. DR McEVEDY AS CHAIRMAN. WELLINGTON, August 28. Considerable interest attached to a meeting of the Executive of the New Zealand Boxing Association to-night, in that this was the first meeting of the newly-ap-pointed Council in Wellington. Dr P. F. McEvedy was unanimously appointed Chairman of the Association. Acknowledging the honour, Dr McEvedy referred briefly to the controversy which had agitated boxing circles for some time, and subsequent transfer of the controlling headquarters to Wellington. \ He expressed the opinion that members who had been asked to hold office for the first year would be found fully competent to handle the affairs of the Association in the interests of the sport generally and to the satisfaction of those connected with it. He concluded with the statement that the object of the governing body was not only to look after the interests of affiliated Associations and competitors, but also to safeguard the interests of the public who supported boxing. The position of secretary was filled by the appointment of Mr J. P. Aldridge, after Mr W. G. Talbot had declined nomination. Mr Aldridge thereupon resigned his position as a member of the Council. It was unanimously decided to ask Mr J. W. Heenan to fill the vacancy.
