PRIMARY SCHOOLS. SOUTHLAND V. OTAGO. The annual match between these two representative teams was played on No 1 ground at the Oval at Dunedin on Saturday. From the initial bully Otago pressed strongly, but were repulsed. The home team, keeping up the pressure, drew first blood. Otago 1, Smithland nil, Up-and-down play continued for the remainder of the first spell Southland played much better hockey on the resumption of the game, and after give-and-take play equalised the score. Southland 1, Otago 1. Both teams were out to score the winning goal, and a few minutes before the call of time Southland succeeded. The game ended:— Southland 2 Otqgo 1 Mr H. J. Smith was referee. EASTERN SOUTHLAND TEAM. MATCH WITH CANTERBURY REPS. A REVERSE SUFFERED. (Special to the Times.) CHRLS'rCHURCH, August 25. At Ensors Road to-day Canterbury ladies’ hockey reps, met and defeated the Eastern Southland touring team by 3 goals to 1 after a fast game. The Southland team is at present proceeding to Nelson, where the New Zealand Ladies’ Hockey Association’s

tournament will take place. The following were the teams:— Canterbury :—Goal—Miss H. Tini; fullbacks, Misses N. Tillyshort and A. Cross (captain) ; halves, Misses C. Clegg, N. Rogers and E. Anderson; forwards, Misses M. Mounsey, T. Johnston, F. Schluter, M. Williams and T. Jarden. Southland:—Goal—Miss D. Hawke; fullbacks, Misses R. Burt and M. Horner; halves, Mifses S. McGregor, Bell and Watson; forwards, Misses I. H. Horner, IL Ashley (Captain) McDonald, Humphries and Clarke. Referees:—Messrs Graham and Thorp. From a bully, Canterbury made a series of short passes in quick succession. Miss Hawke was conceded two corners. A penalty for sticks relieved and Southland pressed, Misses Ashley, McDonald and Horner combining in a rush which carried play to Canterbury circle, where Miss Tillyshort relieved with a long hit. Canterbury atacked and a fine centre from Miss Johnstone to Miss Jarden was stopped by Miss Burt. Canterbury continued the attack. Miss Johnstone accepted a centre from Miss Jarden and scored. Keeping up the pressure, the local girls had their opponents, defending. Miss Jarden sent a fast shot which was well stopped by Miss Hawke. Miss Watson (Southland) finally relieved and the visiting forwards took play to Canterbury circle, where Miss Humphries got offside. The fast attack by the Canterbury forwards saw Miss Johnstone centre to Miss Jarden. Several hot shots were well stopped but Miss Williams finally found the net, giving Canterbury a lead of 2 to nil.

Canterbury attacked from the commencement of the second spell. Miss E. Anderson got in a fine centre but Miss Burt relieved. Clever stick work by the local ladies carried play to Southland’s circle and Miss Schluter scored from a scramble. Miss Horner (Southland) -then made a great run up the wing but a beautiful centre was not taken advantage of and Miss Tillyshort relieved. Miss Ashley then broke through and registered the visitors’ only goal. Miss Clegg went off injured. Successive runs by Misses Mounsey and Jarden put Canterbury on the attack but Misses Burt and Horner defended well. Fast up and down play followed, both sides of for- ■ ards combining well, but hard hitting near the circle spoilt good opportunities. Time was called shortly afterwards leaving Canterbury winners by 3 goals to 1.

SOUTHLAND GIRL’S TEAM. MATCH IN CHIUSTCHURC’IL A DRAWN GAME. (Special to the Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 25. As a curtain raiser to the ladies fixture, girls’ teams from Christchurch and Southland Technical College met in a fast game which resulted in a draw —one goal each. The following were the teams:— Christchurch Technical: goal, Lorna Smith; full-backs, Gertie Ferguson and Monica Halligan; halves, Emily Milton, Iri Mclntyre and Alice Gafton; forwards, Gwen Chaplin (captain), Gwen Andrew, Alice Taylor, Esme Columbus and Maisie MelsilL Southland Technical: goal, Grace Clarke; full-backs, M. Kilby and J. Burt; halves, J. Perry, S. Botherway (captain), and I. Burrell; forwards, D. McNeill, A. Conley, M. Mclnt-yre, J. Winsloe and K. Murray. Mr H. Thorp was referee. From the bully, Southland attacked but Gertie Ferguson relieved with a long hit. The local girls set up a series of attacks and fine centres from Gwen Chaplin carried play to the circle where sticks relieved. Fast up and down play followed. Overhitting by the local girls spoilt many opportunities. Emily Milton saved a dangerous Southland rush but L. Botherway (Southland) secured and passed to K. Murray, who centred to Mary Mclntyre, who scored. Though having a little the better of the play, the local girls could not score, chiefly through overhitting. In the second spell, Miss Murray broke away for Southland and centred but Mary Mclntyre got offside. Joyce Burt defended well in a hot Christchurch attack and sent out to K. Murray, who centred to M. McIntyre. who put in a fine shot which just missed. Keeping up the attack, L. Botherway sent to D. McNeill, who sent to J. Winsloe, whose shot struck the post. A great rush by the Christchurch team com menced with Emily Milton and Iri Mclntyre (halves) who centred. Gwen Andrews sent out to Gwen Chaplin, who netted a difficult shot. From the bully Christchurch attacked and M. Kilby conceded a corner which was resultless. Fast up and down play followed and time was called shortly afterwards leaving the scores one all.
