NEW ZEALAND COAL
DEMAND FOR RAILWAYS. EXPIRATION OF FOREIGN CONTRACTS. (Special to the Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 25. Practically since the beginning of the year, the Government has been purchasing New Zealand coal for the railways on a scale greater than that for many years. This is not to say that large stocks have been built up for railway purposes; indeed, the indications are that stocks are slight, but less imported coal is being used. Contracts for the supply of coal from outside countries, other than Australia, apparently have expired, hence the increased demand for New Zealand coal.
The consumption for domestic purposes this winter has not been heavy, owing to the very mild weather, so that the increased demand by the railways for Dominion coal has been especially welcome to wholesale suppliers and the collieries.
