GORE. At tlie monthly meeting of the Gore District Highhmd Society on Tuesday night, nominations for the ensuing year’s committees took place. Mr J. Hunter, MA t gave a most interesting address on four fanwus couiributots to Blackwood’s Magazine, namely James Hogg, John Wilson, William Maginn and John Gibson Lockhart. Mr Hunter received a hearty vote of thanks for his enjoyable paper and a cordial invitation to “come back again.” The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing and card playing, “Auld Lang Syne” being aung about midnight. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. Messrs A. Speden (Chairman), D. A. Dunn (secretary), W. K. Hamilton, J_ P. Wylie, A. F. Marett, J. Harper and Dr. J. J. Gresham attended Tuesday night/’a monthly meeting of the Gore School Committee. Accounts amounting to £25 4/9 were passed for payment. Han. G. J. Anderson, replying to a fetter from the Committee, promised consider a tion of the recommendation of that body regarding the Bible-reading in Schools' Bill formulated by Mr L. M. Isitt, M.P. The Southland Education Board notified that the Committee’s application for a subsidy of £155 in connection with grounds improvement had now been provisionally granted. The Visiting Committee (Mesirs Marett and MeCreath) recommended the execution of a number of minor improvements and repairs to the school building and grounds, and its report was adopted. The headmaster’s report disclosed that ; for the month ended June 20, the average roll number was 458.4 boys and | 214.2 girls), and the average attendance 426.5 ( 228.5 boys and 198 girls), showing , an attendance percentage of 92.6. Messrs A. Speden and A. A. Rose were appointed the Visiting Committee for the current month. RETURNED SOLDIERS. The fortnightly meeting of the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association, held in the club rooms on Tuesday evening, was attended by Messrs Stewart (Chairman), Quin. Columb, Shelton, Brown, Aitken, Latham, Wilson, Jones, Bannermann, Murray and the secretary. A report was submitted by the Hospital Visiting Sub-committee, stating that no returned men were at present undergoing treatment at that institution. —Received. A report was received from the Sub-com-mittee appointed to make arrangements for the employment of out-of-work returned men in connection with the Poppy Day funds, stating that relief work bs started at an cariy date.—Action approved. One new member was admitted to ihe Association. In connection with the new membership campaign, the treasurer was empowered to send circulars to all members whose sub scriptions are outstanding. A circular was received from the general secretary, Wellington, giving a list of pedigree bulls available under the R.SA. scheme for the 1924-25 season.—Circular to be posted on notice board and advertisement inserted in Mataura Efesign. WYNDHAM. CHORAL SOCIETY. A meeting convened by Messrs L. B. Borrow and D. N. A. Macpherson was held in the Presbyterian Church at Wyndham to consider the formation of a combined choir to take part in the Invercargill competitions. The meeting was attended by Messrs D. N. Macpherson (in the chair), L. B. Borrow, E. G. Macpherson, S. Rice, J. Macpherson, C. Bain, A. McArthur, H. F. Hicks, Mesdames A. Strang, A. McArthur, J. E. Lopdell, G. Wilson, P. B. Courties, L. Harley, Misses F. McDonald, E. Lindsay, H. Harley, I. Gray, M. Macpherson, I. E. Barnett, E. Stevens and J. Taylor. The object of the meeting was discussed, the time being considered short for this year’s competitions. On the motion of Mr Borrow, seconded by Mr Rice, it was unanimously decided to form a Choral Society.

Mr Macpherson spoke on the subject, giving a lot of useful information. It was resolved that the Society be called the Wyndham Choral Society, and Mr L. B. Borrow was appointed conductor. Mr Borrow, in returning thanks for his election, hoped he would be able to help the movement. Members must, of course, understand that a great deal depended on their own efforts in attending practises and generally co-operating. Those present might enlist new members and hand names in to the Committee for enrolment. Mr H. F. Hicks was appointed secretary - • • A Committee, consisting of Messrs Borrow, Rice, D. Macpherson and Hicks, was set up to draft rules to be placed before the first annual meeting, and also to make necessary inquiries regarding an instrument and hall for practise.
