THE UPPER HOUSE
TWO NEW APPOINTMENTS. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 24. The Prime Minister stated to-day that Messrs A. S. Malcolm, formerly member for Clutha, and Vernon Reed, ex-member for the Bay of Islands, are to be appointed to the Legislative Council. Mr Malcolm served 18 years in the House of Representatives, and for many years past had been Chairman of Committees of the House. He was defeated at the 1922 election and does not desire to become a candidate' again for the Lower House. Mr Vernon Reed, who was also defeated at last General Election, had served 14 years in all in the House of Representatives. Four members of the Legislative Council have passed away since last session of Parliament whose names will be placed on record and their services to their country recognised at the Parliamentary Tangi which takes place at the commencement of each session. These are lion. Dr A. K. Newman, M.L.C., formerly Mayor of Wellington, who for a great many years represented one or other of the Wellington seats in the House of Representatives, but did not seek re-elec-tion in 1922 and was appointed to the Upper House last year; Hon. Charles Lewisham, M.L.C., at one time Mayor of Christchurch; John Stallworthy, who was member for Kaiapoi for two Parliaments, 1905-1911, and was well-known in North Auckland ’ journalistic circles, being-owner of the Wairoa Bell; and Mr Gilbert Carson, formerly member for Wanganui and M.L.C.
