TOWN COUNCIL

COMMITTEE REPORTS. At the fortnightly meeting of the Invercargill Town Council to-night, the following committee reports will be considered : RESERVES. The Committee reports:— (1) Having the letter from the Rugby Football Union re levelling, etc., Biggar street Reserve, under consideration. (2) Having consented to the re-erection by the Southland Rugby Football Union, of a temporary dressing shed (removed from Rugby Park on the Biggar street Reserve, during the pleasure of the Council. (3) Having arranged for the markings of graves in regard to which upkeep fees have been paid, both annually and in perpetuity. (4) 'Having ascertained that a key plan of the cemetery allotsments has been deposited in the chapel during the past 12 months. (5) In regard to the lease of the Dunsdale Waterworks Reserve, which expires on September 30, 1924, recommend that a new lease having a currency of ten years and eight months, so as to expire on May 31, 1935, with right of renewal and with such improvements and upset rental as the valuers attach thereto, be put up for public auction with a special condition that the Council accepts no liability whatsoever in regard to the valuation or payment for improvements. (6) Having no recommendation to make in regard to an application by A. Grindlay (apprentice) for an increase of salary. (7) Having examined accounts amounting to £l2” 10/7, and passed same' for payment. FINANCE. The Committee reports:— (1) Having the letter from the W.C.T.U. Carnival Committee re rest room for women, under consideration. (2) Having the proposal by W. J» Boyd re clearing bush, etc., on Pilot Reserve, under consideration. (3) In regard to the application by the Plunket Society, recommend that the Council vote the sum of £25 under Section 303, M.C. Act, 1920, in lieu of granting free tramway passes, the passes which have been issued to be called in. (4) Having the matter of leasing lx»t 1, Reclamation Area, under consideration. (5) With reference to the matter of financ ing the purchase, of a site for the Public Baths, recommend that the Borough solicitor be instructed to take the necessary steps to obtain Parliamentary sanction for the application to this purpose of £2OOO in Special Loan No. 4 or such part thereof as may be required. (6) Recommend that the Borough solicitor be instructed to prepare a new form of agreement in regard to Sewerage Instalment Loans providing that re-payments shall be made quarterly instead of yearly as at present. (7) W’ith reference to the Town Engineer’s report 14/6/24, recommend that tenders be invited for the supply of 12 miro piles and for the driving of the same, the contractor to place the piles in the positions indicated to him by the Harbourmaster. (8) With reference to the Town Clerk’s report 16/6/24, recommend he be authorised to raise up to £lO,OOO Electricity Loan No. 7 at a rate not exceeding 54 per cent, per annum, maturing October 1, 1934. (9) Recommend further, that an additional loan of £3OOO be authorised by special order for the purpose of assisting ratepayers to instal sewerage in houses. (10) Having examined accounts amounting to £695 5/-, and passed same for payment. GAS, TRAMS. ELECTRICITY AND ABATTOIRS. The Committee reports:— (1) Having authorised a requisition by the Gas Department for meters, amounting to £l3O. (2) With reference to the Gas Manager’s report, 16/6/24, having noted with regret, that Air T. Lithgow, meter repairer, is resigning his position, and recommend that a letter be forwarded to him conveying the Council’s appreciation of his past services, which have extended over a long period. (3) Having authorised the Kelvin street office and showroom being closed for the weekly half-holiday on Saturday instead of Wednesday, the alteration to come into force on Saturday, June 28. (4) Recommend that the gasworks residence be offered for sale for removal as' soon as the present occupiers vacate the property, and that tenders be invited accordingly. (5) Having no recommendation to make in regard to an application for increase of salary by W. Wilkinson, foreman fitter. (6) Having considered a request by the Railway Department to have the nine pinus insignis trees on the Eastern boundary of the Gasworks Reserve removed and recommend the Council agrees to their removal, provided (a) that the Railway Department cut the trees down and remove them from the gasworks property; (b) that the work be carried out without cost to the Corporation; (c) that the Railway Department indemnifies the Corporation against any loss through damage to the adjoining fence and gas holder. (7) With reference to the matter of abattoir improvements, recommend that the plan and specification of the new pens, etc., now laid upon the table, be approved and that they be forwarded to Wellington for consent by the Department of Agriculture. (8) Having examined accounts amounting to £1348 19/1, and passed some for payment. PUBLIC WORKS. The Committee reports:— (1) Having considered the tenders for the supply and delivery of water meters, and accepted Richardson, McCabe and Go’s, tender for 75 i-inch and 25 finch dry-dial meters, amounting to £257 18/4, (to be charged against revenue). (2) Having gone through the annual estimates of the Public Works, Sewerage, Quarry and Waterworks Departments, and handed them on to the Finance Committee. (3) Having considered a plan of subdivision of Sections 11, 12 and 13, Block X, Robertson street (Gordon Brown), and recommend it be approved and certified on payment of the prescribed fee, and that a tracing thereof be obtained for reference. (4) Recommend further, that in future all plans of subdivisions of land submitted, must be accompanied by a tracing thereof. (5) Having granted two loans to instal sewerage, totalling £69 9/-. (6) Having examined accounts amounting to £1348 19/1, and passed same for payment.
