TOKANUI. DEBATING SOCIETY. (From our Correspondent.) The opening of the Tokanui Social and Debating Society was held on Wednesday night, in perfect weather and just on eighty odd rolled up in order to support the Society. The evening took the form of a social and dance and about 9.15 p.m. the M.C., Mr Hagen, handed the evening over to the President, Mr A. Boniface. The President in his address welcomed those present on behalf of the Society and hoped that during the winter months the debate would be of a social and educational value to all. The debate for the evening was, “Has the Invention of Modern Gunpowder and High Explosives, been a Benefit to Mankind?” Speakers for affirmative were Mr W. Hagen and Mr J. Brown; speakers for the negative were Mr George Gregg and Mr H. Wilks. The subject was then opened for discussion and Dr McCarthy spoke. The voting resulted in favour of the affirmative. Supper then handed round by the Committee. Dr McCarthy and Mr C. Brown sang and were loudly encored. Dancing was carried on for the rest of the evening until the early hours of Thursday. The music was supplied by Mr and Mrs Donnelly.
