THE WEMBLEY RODEO
. CONTESTS CONTINUED. STEER-ROPING SUSPENDED. (By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright.) (Reuter’s Telegrams.) LONDON, June 19. The public continue to throng the rodeo contests, notwithstanding the elimination of the steer-roping, and the considerable agitation which is fed by casualties to the competitors. Steer-roping was continued privately, when another steer was killed, having its neck broken, and a third broke a horn. In the House of Commons, Mr Henderson was closely questioned by objectors to the steer-roping contest at Wembley. He said that not only the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animate but also the police were applying for summonses in respect to cases of alleged cruelty. He had no power to prohibit such contests, but strongly requested the rodeo authorities to suspend steer-roping until the summonses were disposed of. The Daiiy Express says that Mr C. B. Cochran, the organiser of the Rodeo and the legal adviser of Mr Tex Austin, at a conference last night decided to suspend the steer-roping contests, which have been held privately at the Wembley Stadium, pending the hearing of the summonses, which will be heard on Tuesday. Mr Cochran said the public performances of the rodeo would continue. It was admittedly a rough game, but it was a genuine sport played by men and women who counted for a good deal in the development of the Empire.
