FOR THE NEXT WAR

PROTECTION AGAINST AIR RAIDS. A REMARKABLE STATEMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SUVA, December 17. Dr. Norwood, pastor of the City Temple, declared, in the course of a sermon, that the Woolwich Arsenal was working overtime on the manufacture of 1,000,000 gas masks, which would be issued to every person in the danger zone of air raids if Britain again became involved in war. Dr. Norwood stated, “My information is reliable. My statement is made with the object of showing how false in sentimentality is all the talk concerning the League of Nations. I don’t blame the authorities who are making preparation, as hostilities, if they come again, will be so sudden that it will be too late then to prepare safeguards.”

Later. The War Office has officially denied Dr. Norwood’s statement.
