Mr J. E. Winsloe, secretary of the South* land League, left for the north yesterday. Mr 11. J. Dixon, S.M., late clerk of the Court at Hamilton, has been apointed magistrate for the Central Otago district. Mr Tjco de Chateau returned from Australia by the Mocraki on Tuesday to make preliminary arrangements for a New Zealand tour of the Sistine Choir soloists. Mr Norman T. Sinclair, assistant lecturer in Latin at the Auckland University College has left for England. He has been awarded a free return passage to Euroi>e by the New Zealand University, and has also received an overseas scholarship from Trinity College, Cambridge, where he intends to pursue his studies. The Rev. Frank H. Smith, of Ilford, London, arrived in Wellington on Tuesday, and left by the northern express for Rotorua. Mr Smith has been the minister of the Baptist Church at Ilford tor twentyone years, and his jieople have given him a year’s rest. He will return to Wellington next Monday, and leave by the Tahiti for America on Tuesday. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors on Wednesday I the president (Mr Arthur H. Bridgei referred to the death of Mr S. Percy Smith, F.R.G.8., of New Plymouth. Mr Bridgesaid that Mr Smith was a foundation member of the Institute and one of its first vice-presidents. He was president in 1891 and 1892 and was elected a Fellow in 1902. He had also held the position of SurveyorI General. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried in silence, members standing. Mr J. L. McG. Watson, chief of the St. Andrew’s Society was entertained by the councillors and several friends of the Society at a social in the Floral Tea Rooms on Wednesday night. Dr Stewart occupied the chair and proposed the toart of the Chief in happy and characteristic vein. Mr Watson, in reply, thanked the members for honouring him in such a happy and pleasing way. He felt sure tbe Society was filling a want in Southland and while he had the assistance and support of the members he was sure the Society would continue to prosper. Other toasts honoured were ‘The Chieftains”, “Kindred Societies,” "The Press,” "The Secretary” and "Die Chairman.” Musical items were contributed by the Rev. R. Francis, Messrs T. H. Watson, Lindsay Duncan and Pipe-Major L. Taylor. A Wellington Press As-.ociation telegram states that a public farewell was tendered to Mr G. G. Aitken, the Rhodes Scholar and athlete, who leaves on Saturday for England. The Mayor presided, and representatives of the Government, tiro Oposition, civic and educational authorities made congratulatory speeches. Mr Aitken was presented with a substantial cheque. In the course of his remarks the Hon. J. G. Coates said that if Mr Aitken played Iho game as he had played it in New Zealand, everyone would be satisfied. Mr Wilford spoke of how New Zealanrlers were snapped up at Home. He hoped Mr Aitken would return to the Dominion and give New Zealand rhe benefit of all he had learned. Mr Aitken said he thought he could promise that he would return to New Zealand.
