GRASSMERE SIDING
THE DEPARTMENTS ATTITUDE. Recently Mr John Bateman of Bay Road, forwarded to Mr J. R. Hamilton, M.P., a well-signed petition asking the Railway Department to put a railway siding in at Grassmere. Mr Hamilton received the following reply from the acting-Minister of Railways (Mr Guthrie) : “With reference to your representations forwarding a petition from residents of Grassmere and surrounding district urging that a rail .yay siding be provided at Grassmere, I have the honour to inform you that inquiries which have been made show that the prospective traffic would be insufficient to warrant a siding so near Invercargill and Waikiwi. The road access between the locality and Waikiwi is good and as the woollen mill and rope and brick works are about the same distance from that station as from Grassmere the facilities at the former station provide reasonably for requirements. In the circumstances and having regard to the fact that only urgent and essential works can be undertaken during the present financial stringency it is regretted that the request conveyed by the petition cannot be complied with.”
Mr Hamilton has announced that he is not satisfied with the reply and intends to prosecute the matter further.
