SCHOOL COMMITTEE

THE SOUTH SCHOOL. The South School Committee held theijf monthly meeting on Tuesday, there being present: Messrs A. McCulloch (chairman), C. Patton, B. ?mith, Meadames McGregor, Parkin and Garrett. The headmaster reported the number of scholars on the roll as 725; average attendance 660. The amount to the credit of the pupils in the Saving Bank was £l4O 4s. The term examination now in progress gave every indication of excellent results in the various standards at the end of the year. The Rev. H. Maclean and Mr D. Scott attended the meeting as delegates from a ; number of residents of the South end of* Invercargill who desired to form a tennis club for the young people. The deputation requested permission to use the school grounds for a tennis court after four o’clock in the afternoon, and if this concession were granted expert players would be willing to coach the elder pupils of the school. The committee expressed sympathy with the ideas of the delegates, but as the building of the ne wschool would be commenced in a month or two no definite reply could be given. The matter was left oyer until enquiries were made re the new building by the chairman. The chairman reported that Mr Gibb was willing to lay out the school garden in Bowmont street and supervise the work of the children in the garden for a week. £7 10s was voted to be spent on the garden.
