THE COAL SHORTAGE
RAILWAY RESTRICTIONS. MINISTER REFUSED PERMIT. MR ISITT’S PROTEST. (Per United Pres* Association). CHRISTCHURCH, August 2tt. The following telegram was forwarded to the Prime Minister this afternoon by Me L. M. Isitt, M.P. : “I think that some of the railway restrictions are absolutely unreasonable and the resentment here over the refusal to take school boarders home is intense. One of our Methodist preachers was refused a passage tn allow him to take a Sunday appointment. Had he been a beer barrel he would have been carried,” SCHOOL TROUBLES IN NORTH. AUCKLAND, August 20. The Auckland Grammar Schools are seriously affected as a result of the railway Department’s refusal to carry scholars home for the school vacation. The principal of the Girls’ Grammar School states that despite the representations made to the Minister no further consideration had been extended to the girl boarders. Efforts are, however, being made to get the girls home by private conveyance and the numbers delayed in Auckland are being reduced daily. About thirty permits would be required to get the remaining girls home. The boys are going home by devious routes, motor cars being used where possible.
